SDV Construction’s commitment to safety starts long before we or our subcontractors reach the job site. All SDV employees and subcontractors participate in our Safety Orientation and Reference Handbook Program, ensuring a consistent level of safety knowledge and accountability across our worksites.

“SDV Construction is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for our employees, clients, and subcontractors,” said Susan Baca, SDV Construction’s Safety Director. “We are proud to provide our Safety Orientation and Reference Handbook Program and materials to our partners as part of our ongoing effort to minimize jobsite injuries, mitigate workplace hazards, and promote a culture of safety on every project.”

The program introduces workers to workplace hazards, company safety policies, and emergency procedures, while providing the knowledge and skills needed to recognize potential risks, properly use personal protective equipment (PPE), follow safe work practices, and respond effectively to incidents or emergencies.

Every month, our team comes together for our Mass Safety Meeting - a time to focus on what matters most: getting everyone home safe.

This month’s topic: Heat Illness and Prevention

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found 834 heat related emergency room visits in New Mexico, with 120 identified as work related and 6 of them resulting in fatalities. With construction workers being 13x more likely to suffer heat related illnesses compared to other industries, it is vital to understand prevention methods and ways to look for warning signs. Prevention includes monitoring weather and the heat index, drinking one quart of water per hour, and taking regular rest breaks in high heat. Signs you may be suffering from heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, hot and dry skin, thirst, and lack of consciousness.

Safety training days like this are about preparation and confidence. The more we train, the better equipped we are to protect ourselves and support one another - on site, at work, and beyond.

Thanks to the Albuquerque Jobs Corps for allowing us to have a booth at their most recent Job Fair! We were able to work hands on building Peg Solitaire games with everyone who visited our booth.

"We truly appreciate the chance to engage with all the young folks who wanted a chance to build something for themselves," said Miles Gossett, SDV Construction's Talent Resource Manager. "Also, thank you to Albuquerque Job Corps for providing an opportunity for them, our community, and the future of building here in our lovely hometown."
