Albuquerque neighborhoods are getting ready for an evening of costumes, candy, glowing jack-o’-lanterns, and little ghosts and goblins making their way from door to door.

Before welcoming trick-or-treaters, take a few minutes to make sure your landscape is ready for all those visitors. Clear fallen leaves and loose debris from walkways, move garden hoses and extension cords out of high-traffic areas, and check that your porch and landscape lighting are working properly.

A little mulch goes a long way this Fall.

One of the hardest-working elements in your landscape might also be one of the most overlooked. And while mulch may not win any beauty contests, it certainly deserves some recognition!

As temperatures begin to cool across Albuquerque, organic mulch plays an important role in protecting your landscape. A properly applied layer helps retain valuable soil moisture, moderate soil temperatures, reduce w**d growth, and gradually improve soil health as it decomposes.

But when it comes to mulch, more isn't always better. Applying too much mulch or piling it against tree trunks and plant crowns can trap excess moisture and contribute to decay. For many planting beds, a layer approximately 2 to 3 inches deep is sufficient, with a little breathing room around the base of trees and shrubs.

Fall is a great time to inspect your existing mulch, refresh areas that have thinned, and make sure your landscape is prepared for Albuquerque's cooler, drier months.

Think of mulch as a cozy blanket for your landscape. It should keep the roots comfortable without tucking the tree trunk in too tightly.
