What are the new trends in residential construction? We've all probably heard "tiny houses" and "aging in place" home design are hot searches. Where are most of us in these trends?
According to articles in Wikipedia, about 63% of Americans are in homes they own or they are buying - more than most people in other countries of the world. And what did our homes cost us? "For homeowners with middle-range household incomes, ranging from $40,000 to $60,000, the median home value was $112,000, while the median size was 1,700 square feet (160 m2) and the median year of construction was 1970." Our purchase stake - not counting mortgage expense - was around $66/square foot.
How does that compare to newly constructed homes? The median price of home construction contracts - not including lot and utility costs - is about $145/square foot. The median price of a manufactured "tiny house" is $290/square foot.
