On June 6, 1866, ranchers Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving set out from Texas and headed for Colorado with 2,000 head of cattle and 18 cowboys. To avoid the Comanche and Kiowa Indians, they took a longer route following the Pecos River. In July, when they reached Fort Sumner, N.M., they found the U.S. Military eager to buy beef in order to feed the Navajo and Apache confined at the Bosque Redondo Reservation. The government paid $12,000 for the steers, doubling the initial investment of Goodnight and Loving. As word of their success spread, the Goodnight-Loving Trail was established.
