W**d ID Highlight:

Spotted spurge has got to win some kind of award for best supporting actor in lawns this time of year. Able to thrive in HOT conditions (think 100 degree days along concrete borders of your lawn), this low-to-the-ground crawler loves late summers.

Because this plant is a prolific seeder, it is best to pull or spray these w**ds before they become fully mature. Another great trick is to use a pre-emergent spot control product (such as Preen) along borders where w**d control is popping up this time of year. This will help prevent new plants from maturing after you have removed or sprayed the parent plant.

Looking toward the future, make a mental note where you see spotted spurge in your lawn, as it is often an indicator of very hard, compacted ground that would benefit from intentional aeration this fall. Loosening that soil will help the surrounding grasses to fill in and out compete w**d pressure in future seasons.

We are on the seeding home stretch and I thought I would take a moment to share some math I was doing in the tractor yesterday.

When this is done, there is a very, very good chance, we will have planted around 13.17 BILLION seeds in the last 10 days. 🌾

We have done all of this while still harvesting, irrigating, mowing, maintaining, answering phones, scheduling, coordinating with coworkers and vendors... all while tilling, feeding, spraying, and repairing what needs attention... all while still being humans who have lives and families and friends and teams to coach ... all while saying our pleases and thank yous and eating our vegetables and helping our neighbors clean up from storms ... and while remembering to get some sleep.

This is all to say that our crew is incredible. If you are connected with any of our staff out in the wild of real life, be sure to remind them they are real world superheroes. ❤✨

Just a reminder to get your Step 3 feeding down in the next week or two.

After that feeding, if you still feel like there is room for growth (pun intended) in the overall health of your lawn, consider sneaking in an extra feeding of 13-13-13 in mid to late September to help boost growth heading into the fall growing season. Kentucky bluegrass LOVES to put on healthy growth in the fall - so now's the time to make some gains, Friends! 🥰

Seeding season is officially upon us!

This PSA is simply to celebrate the beautiful weather of the last few days and our gratitude and relief to be back in the fields, preparing next year's crop.

If you get a chance to be outside today, take it! And if you catch a minute, please say a little prayer for your friendly, neighborhood sod farmers who are working very, very hard in the coming month. 🥰

Thank you, City of Cedar Rapids Iowa Government, for this very good reminder!

Let's take a moment to talk lawn mowing etiquette and techniques that help protect our stormwater systems and keep our neighborhoods looking sharp.

1. When mowing, be intentional in blowing your clippings back onto your own property. The best way to do this is to make at least two (sometimes more) passes around your property's border with your clippings blowing back toward your property. Every mower is different, so make a point to pay attention to how many passes are necessary with your mower to ensure no clippings blow onto the street once your border passes are completed.
2. I know we are all behind in mowing (trust us, we have hundreds of acres we are trying to keep up with!) with these consistent rains, but it is really important to never take off more than 1/3 of the green leaf in a single mowing. This might mean that you may need to mow a couple of times at higher heights than you normally prefer as you incrementally work your lawn's height back down to where you would like it to be. That's ok. Higher lawn heights, especially in the summer, help grasses tolerate heat stress better, so it actually can be a good thing to have them be a bit longer than usual this time of year anyway.
3. If your lawn has become so tall that you have no choice but to create a lot of clippings be sure to mow again as soon as possible after the piles of clippings have dried in a different pattern to spread/mulch the clippings back into your canopy quickly and efficiently. Doing this will prevent the piles of clippings from smothering healthy grass underneath. You can also consider bagging clippings, but as a general rule, we do not recommend bagging clippings because you are removing future food and organic material from your property.
4. If you do accidentally blow clippings into the street or sidewalk, take the time to clean them up after. Aside from just being the nice and neighborly thing to do, it really does help to keep us all safer from flash flooding that can occur if stormwater systems become clogged with unnecessary debris.
5. Schedule your fall aerations for September and October now. This year has been a good reminder that we all need to do our parts to reduce runoff pressure on city systems. We can all help by ensuring that our property is filtering as much water as possible to help Mother Nature, our plants, and our stormwater systems all at the same time! Core aerations will also help clippings/thatch break down at a healthy rate. It's a win-win-win-win situation!
