Want to stand out as an electrical apprentice? Start with these six habits:
1. Learn the “why” behind the work. Don’t just follow instructions, ask questions and start learning the code behind what you’re doing.
2. Think one step ahead.
Pay attention to the task and anticipate which tool, material, or next step may be needed.
3. Speak up when you’re unsure.
It’s better to ask and learn the correct way than guess and create a problem someone else has to fix.
4. Choose accuracy before speed. Focus on doing clean, correct work first. Speed develops naturally through practice and repetition.
5. Get comfortable reading plans.
Follow along with the job drawings and learn how lighting, receptacles, rooms, conduit, boxes, and fire alarm systems are laid out.
6. Be someone the team can depend on.
Show up consistently, stay ready to work, and take pride in what you do. Reliability gets noticed more than you may realize.
You don’t need to know everything during your first year but your attitude, effort, and willingness to learn will set you apart.
