With the cold coming in here's a few important tips.
1. Do you know where and how to turn your water off? I would get familiar with that process now. Leaves and snow cover could make finding your shut off tricky when every second counts. See link for video at thr bottom of the post.
2. Fill up a tub as freezing weather comes in. This way you have water to flush toilets if your incoming water line freezes.
3. Open cabinets on exterior walls where plumbing is. Example kitchen sink, bathroom.
4. Bump your house thermostat up.
5. I personally dont like the dripping faucet idea. The reason being, is running water freezes too. You'll see neighborhood waterfalls frozen. Now how this relates in my personal experiences is when you're dripping a faucet and that line starts to freeze your stream that was hitting the sink is now dribbling on your counter and on your floors. Typically this happens on a upstairs sink that isn't being watched. So drip them if you're watching them. I personally have seen that flood multiple times, so I prefer to just intentionally run water at everything occasionally.
6. If your lines freeze, don't automatically panic, instead be prepared to turn your water off when the thaw comes. A lot of houses can freeze and thaw without problems. If you have a newer pex house. Lines will freeze. Pex does pretty good most of the time of thawing out without issues. My last house froze everytime and I never had issues when it thawed out.
7. Don't call us if your lines are actively frozen. We wont know where the ice block is, and won't respond to those calls. What YOU can do is use a hair dryer and warm the pipes up where you believe the freeze is.
8. If things go south, and you dont know how to turn the water off, ask your neighbors or call 911. They can get your water off faster than I can get to you. Basically get a worst case scenario plan together. Talk to your neighbors, have a plan.
9. If your laundry is on an exterior wall, the p-trap may freeze. So when your laundry dumps it will over flow into the house. I dont recommend doing laundry Sat-Mon.
A burst pipe doesn't have to be a huge insurance claim or some catastrophe. It can be as simple as a sheetrock repair if you're prepared.
