Last night was no joke, Lehigh Valley.
Around 10:30 PM the tornado warnings started lighting up everyone's phones. Wind gusts hit 60 to 70 mph. Trees came down everywhere. Over 20,000 homes lost power across Lehigh and Northampton counties. Saucon Valley, Bethlehem, Salisbury Township, and Upper Saucon got hit the hardest.
A lot of people are waking up this morning looking at their yard, seeing some branches down, and thinking their house made it through fine.
But here's the thing.
Wind damage to your roof, gutters, and siding isn't always obvious from the ground. Some of the most expensive problems start as things you can't even see from the driveway. Take five minutes and check these four things before you move on with your day.
YOUR ROOF
Winds over 60 mph can lift shingles at the edges and along ridgelines without tearing them off completely.
From the driveway they look fine. But the seal underneath is broken, and that means the next rain is getting underneath and into your decking.
Walk your yard. Look for shingle pieces or granules near your gutters, downspouts, or foundation. Granules look like coarse black sand. If you see any, that's not cosmetic. Your roof is exposed.
YOUR GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS
Heavy rain moving that fast pushes debris into your gutter system in minutes. When gutters clog or pull away from the fascia, water backs up under the roof edge and into your soffit. From there it gets into your walls.
Check that your gutters are still firmly attached. Look for sagging or separation at the seams. Make sure your downspouts are draining away from the foundation.
If water pooled near your basement walls this morning, your gutters probably failed during the storm.
YOUR SIDING
Straight line winds can crack, loosen, or pop vinyl and fiber cement panels without knocking them completely off.
Look along the bottom edges and around windows. Anything bowed, shifted, or gapped is a problem. Loose siding lets rain get behind it, and moisture behind your siding leads to mold, rot, and insulation damage you won't notice until it becomes a much bigger bill.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
Walk your property. Take photos of anything that looks off. Missing shingles, dented siding, sagging gutters, broken flashing. Document everything.
Do NOT climb on your roof. Wet shingles are extremely slippery and structural damage might not be visible until you're already standing on it.
Call your insurance company if you see damage. Last night's storm damage is typically covered under homeowners insurance. The sooner you document it, the smoother the claim goes.
And if you're not sure what you're looking at, get a professional inspection. We do free roof and exterior inspections with no obligation. We get up there safely, document everything with photos, and give you an honest assessment. That's it.
