🌱 Lawn Care Tip: Don't Cut Your Grass Too Short! 🌱

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is mowing their lawn too short. In fact, the shortest lawns are often the lawns that have the most problems.

Short grass goes into drought stress much sooner, is more vulnerable to insect damage, and struggles to develop a healthy root system. I've measured some lawns this year that were under 2 inches tall, and unfortunately, many of them may not recover if the hot, dry conditions continue.

Keeping your grass taller is one of the most important things you can do for a healthy lawn. Taller grass:

✅ Holds moisture longer✅ Reduces drought stress✅ Encourages deeper root growth✅ Helps choke out weeds naturally✅ Creates a healthier, thicker lawn✅ Provides better resistance to insects and disease

As we head into the heat of summer, resist the urge to scalp your lawn. A little extra height can make a huge difference in how your lawn handles Nebraska's heat, wind, and dry conditions.

🌱 A Friendly Lawn Care Reminder 🌱

First, we would like to thank all of our customers for your continued support and for helping keep your lawns looking their best.

The combination of recent dry conditions and persistent winds this year has caused lawns to dry out much faster than normal, especially along the edges near sidewalks, driveways, streets, and curbs. These areas are typically the first to show signs of drought stress.

To help maintain a healthy lawn throughout the summer, make sure your entire lawn is receiving complete and even watering coverage. Watering during the evening or overnight hours is ideal, as it allows more water to soak into the soil instead of evaporating during the heat of the day.

We also recommend watering deeply and less frequently rather than applying small amounts of water every day. Deep watering encourages deeper root growth, helping your lawn become stronger, healthier, and more drought-tolerant throughout the season.

If you still have areas showing winter damage, a very light raking can help remove dead material and allow new growth to fill in more quickly. After lightly raking, you can also overseed those thin or damaged areas to encourage thicker growth and improve recovery. Please give these areas extra attention when watering to help ensure successful germination and establishment.

When mowing, we strongly recommend maintaining a mowing height of 3½ to 4 inches this year. Taller grass helps shade the soil, retain moisture, develop deeper roots, and better withstand the hot, dry, and windy conditions we have been experiencing. As always, avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade during any single mowing.

A healthy lawn starts with proper watering and mowing practices, and your efforts make a tremendous difference in how your lawn performs throughout the season.

If your lawn feels behind this year, you’re not alone. Maybe it looks thin, stressed, dry, or just not as healthy as normal. Even lawns that usually look great are struggling right now.

We really didn’t have much of a winter, and we’re dealing with severe drought conditions. Moisture levels are way behind, lakes and rivers are down, and it’s affecting grass growth everywhere. On top of that, the wind has also been extremely hard on lawns this year. Constant wind causes wind burn and pulls moisture out of the ground even faster, which adds even more stress to grass trying to recover and grow. Some years are great for lawns, and some years are tougher — this is one of the tough ones.

A lot of lawns are still coming out of dormancy and are behind because of the lack of moisture and unusual weather conditions this season. If your yard isn’t where you want it to be yet, don’t panic. You’re not alone, and it does not mean you’ve failed or done something wrong.

Right now, one of the best things you can do for your lawn is aerate before the hotter weather fully sets in. Once we start hitting consistent 85+ degree days, lawns become even more stressed. Aeration helps relieve compaction, allows water to soak in deeper, and gives roots a better chance to grow.

Also, make sure you’re watering the best you can. Deep, consistent watering a few times a week is much better than quick light watering every day. Try not to mow your grass too short either, because taller grass helps hold moisture during drought conditions.

I also want to thank everyone for supporting local and continuing to trust Fergie’s K-Lawn. A lot of you are doing a great job caring for your lawns despite tough conditions this year, and it absolutely shows. We appreciate every customer and will continue doing everything we can to help lawns recover and stay healthy throughout the season.

“The grass around the tree is damaged due to insects that thrived in our unusually warm winter. Because it was so dry, these insects fed on the root system, causing significant damage. The best solution is to aerate around the trees and throughout the entire lawn to help establish a new root system. Even though it’s a little early, now is the time—we need to aerate and get the grass back on track. Add grass seed after you aerate in the damaged areas.
