A great opportunity to learn more about timber marking that will be held on August 4th. Hope to see you there!

For those with an interest in learning about timber marking, measuring, and economics...join us August 4 for a timber marking workshop.

This site is currently being marked for a sale. The plan is to go over the tree selection decision making process that has been done to date, go over the potential value of the currently marked trees, and then continue the marking and measuring of trees being added to the sale. It’s pretty simple, but should be enlightening if you have never marked a sale before.

While inventorying a woodland, we were lucky enough to catch sight of a barred owl! Although nocturnal, it is not uncommon to hear barred owls calling during the day. Their most common call is known to sound similar to the phrase “Who Cooks for You”. This call is to announce the owl’s mating territory and may sometimes be answered back with “ferocious” squabbling, screeching, and kackling calls from a nearby territorial barred owl. If you find yourself surrounded by mature and ravined forests, you may be fortunate enough to hear, or catch sight of a barred owl.

Take a look at a recent panorama picture I took on a logging site. The left side is marked, waiting to be cut and the right side is done. The loggers are doing a great job.

Welcome to Frontier Woodland Service. This video will give you a little insight into who we are, and what we do. It was filmed at a recent timber harvest. Thank you Haley Santee for walking the woods with me that day.

Well it's that time of year again and I don't mean Easter. Ran into these beauties yesterday in the woods. The weren't layed by the Easter Bunny, but by a turkey. Don't worry we didn't disturb them, she'll be back on her nest in no time!

It's important to see both the forest and the trees when working with a landowner. I recently found a massive 36", 3 log American Elm while marking timber. Never fear, the Elm is safe. It's amazing that it has survived this long, with the ever present threat of Dutch Elm Disease. I will not be the one to end this Giant's reign.

Mother Nature doesn't always make sense. I saw bunches of healthy trees that she has toppled in the wind, but this tree is still alive. It's missing more than 2/3 of its base and is mostly hollow, but it will leaf out in the spring.

Sitting on the hillside, watching the loggers complete a nice thinning. This landowner wants to be able to harvest again in 15-20 years. The area in the picture was finished yesterday.
