Same age barn. Same age spray foam. One was painted… one wasn’t.
Will paint make a huge difference in the long-term performance or longevity of the foam? Not really. Properly installed spray foam will continue doing its job whether it’s painted or not.
So why do we often recommend painting it?
Because the prep work is already done during the foam application process, making it the most cost-effective time to paint. It also gives the building a cleaner, more finished appearance and helps reflect light throughout the space. Most barns and shops don’t have an abundance of natural light, so that added brightness can make a surprising difference in how the building feels and functions.
Neither option is wrong. It really comes down to whether you want “functional” or “functional and finished.”
