With all the storms this past week, the roofing and repair scammers will start coming out of the woodwork. Here are a few tips and reminders to protect yourself, if you do need to get work done after the storms.
1. Don't pay before the work is done. If they are a reputable company, they will complete the work and then ask for payment. Some might ask for a partial payment, but if they ask for more than 1/3, then move on to another company. Most will work with your homeowners insurance for payment. If they are telling you they will make you a great deal, but you have to pay first, they are probably going to take your money and run.
2. Get a contract that tells you exactly what is damaged, what the repairs will be and total estimated costs. The final bill might fluctuate a little, but any major changes should also be discussed with you prior to completion.
3. Check with your homeowners insurance. They will tell you exactly what is covered so you know where to start.
4. Use a reputable company. You can ask for references or check with the BBB, or ask your friends and family for recommendations. Remember, that there will be dozens of so called "roofing and repair companies" but some of them are just looking to scam you.
5. Most importantly, ask questions and don't let them bully you. If they try to intimidate or scare you, walk away.
