The Williams Farmhome proves that a pantry can be both hardworking and beautiful.

Located behind the main kitchen, this generous second kitchen includes a second sink, dishwasher and abundant storage. A wide opening connects the two spaces and perfectly frames the star of the pantry: a custom-designed, artisan-crafted cabinet that becomes a focal point when viewed from the main kitchen.

A separate walk-in entrance from the garden makes it easy to bring in fresh produce, muddy boots or outdoor supplies without disrupting the main cooking and gathering space.

Its stylish counterpart is The Wellcott’s scullery, created by Silent Rivers. That fully equipped second kitchen includes an oven, microwave, sink, refrigerator, prep counters, vegetable storage drawers and custom handcrafted open cabinetry. Direct access from the garage and outdoors makes it a convenient landing place for groceries, deliveries and garden harvests.

One is rooted in the warmth and resourcefulness of an Iowa farmhome. The other brings behind-the-scenes functionality to refined modern living. Both show how a thoughtfully designed second kitchen can help the main kitchen remain welcoming, organized and ready for gathering.

What happens when a farmhouse kitchen becomes the heart of family life?

Nestled among horses, sheep, and the Iowa countryside, this cherished family farm needed more than just extra cooking space. The owner envisioned a welcoming kitchen where grandchildren could gather after riding horses, meals could be shared, board games could fill the table, and quiet evenings could be spent reading by the wood-burning stove while taking in views of the farm through walls of windows.

The result is the Eclectic Farm Home Kitchen Addition - a thoughtfully designed expansion that feels as though it has always belonged. The space features custom cabinetry crafted in-house and incorporates meaningful artifacts collected from around the farm, creating a home that reflects the family's history and character.

Completed last summer and enhanced this year with beautiful stonework and landscaping, this addition has become exactly what was imagined: a gathering place for generations and the true heart of the farmstead.

As we celebrate Independence Day, we also recognize a truly historic milestone - America's 250th birthday.

For 250 years, Americans have worked hard, built strong communities, cared for their neighbors, and created homes where families can grow and thrive. Across Iowa's farms, small towns, and rural landscapes, that spirit of independence, craftsmanship, and stewardship continues today.

The wait is over! The Des Moines Arts Festival begins today at 11:00 AM, and the Iowa Home Crafters team is excited to be there all weekend!

Stop by our Silent Rivers + Iowa Home Crafters booth to explore what's new. We'll be sharing photos and stories from some of our latest projects, including our recently completed PHIUS-certified Passive House, custom homes, remodeling work, and handcrafted cabinetry created in our Ames woodshop.

We're especially excited to share about the custom cabinetry we've designed and built - not only for our projects, but also for collaborations with other builders who trust our team to bring exceptional craftsmanship to their clients' homes.
