When I was young and trapping with my Grandfather "Pop" DiSalvo, we used to go near this old church quite often while running fox and c**n traps. (early and mid 80's)

Later my best friend Arnold Favinger and I trapped that area we used to go by the church as well, but it was not in use at that point (early to mid 90's).

A few times I remember cars pulling into the then unpaved parking area and people getting out (African Americans), and let me tell you they were ALWAYS dressed to the NINES! All the ladies had their hair done up and their finest dresses and all the gentlemen were in impressive suits and they ALL wore hats as well. Pop and I would just say "G'mornin" to them and they'd tip their hats and say "G'mornin"back.

When I was back in the area over Christmas my Dad and I went by there just to see the old trapping areas, and were amazed at the changes. The church was restored and freshly painted, the parking area was now paved, and they had erected a fence with the gravestone in the article below. We looked inside and were amazed as how small it was and how few pews it had.

Spring Valley AME church florished for nearly 100 years before a dwindling congregation and a suspected arson closed its doors. Decades later, the church has reopened as a Black history museum.

The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.
Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband/wife/partner, a parent caretaker, family support, friend...
There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!

I am getting a number of calls about birds in bathroom vents this past week. These are usually European starlings (an invasive species) and they will pack the vent full of nesting materials, as well as nestlings, their droppings and possibly bird mites as well.

It also appears we have a rash of late racc**n litters this spring as I am getting a number of call about racc**ns in walls and ceilings.

Bat season has been crazy busy this year! I feel the old song "I been everywhere", Davenport, Clinton, Williamsburg, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Webster City, Osceola, Oskaloosa, Newton, not to mention all the places under 60 miles away.
