AGS is a tick-borne allergic condition triggered by a sugar molecule called alpha-gal, found in most mammals except for humans and primates. The primary culprit in the US is the lone star tick, though other ticks can also transmit it. AGS causes allergic reactions, sometimes severe, to red meat and other products containing alpha-gal. Ticks also carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and alpha-gal syndrome (AGS). Tick bites can also cause tick paralysis, and the bites themselves can cause local irritation and inflammation.
