Alaska Day is this Sunday!

As we look ahead to the holiday, we're celebrating the incredible place we're fortunate to call home and the people and communities that make it special.

Since opening our doors in Anchorage in 1981, CRW has had the opportunity to work in more than 200 communities across Alaska, from the Aleutian Islands to the North Slope, Southeast Alaska to the Interior, and just about everywhere in between.

Each red dot on this map represents a community where we've helped plan, design, or improve infrastructure. Behind those dots are decades of projects, partnerships, and relationships that have defined our firm and given purpose to our work.

Imagine a day without water.

No tap, no shower, no flushing toilet or dishwasher. For most of us, it's hard to image.

But in some Alaska communities, reliable running water and sewer service is still a goal being worked toward. And everywhere, the infrastructure that makes these everyday conveniences possible requires careful planning, investment, and maintenance.

At CRW, water is central to much of what we do. From designing first-service water and sewer systems in rural Alaska to improving water treatment, storage, distribution, and wastewater facilities, our engineers help communities develop and maintain essential infrastructure.

And our work with water extends well beyond the tap. We also design stormwater systems, study flooding, and develop solutions that help manage runoff, protect infrastructure, and maintain healthy waterways. Much of this work goes unnoticed when everything functions as it should. But life would look very different without it.

Today, on , we're recognizing the value of water and the people who plan, design, build, operate, and maintain the infrastructure we all depend on.

National Public Lands Day (Sept. 26) has us thinking about the places we recreate and the work it sometimes takes to get there. In Whittier, the vision for extending Sh***un Cove Road goes back more than 40 years, and it’s exciting to see another piece of that vision take shape.

CRW's team has spent the past eight years working with the City of Whittier to design and permit the extension through some very Alaskan terrain. The road will ultimately extend to reach public U.S. Forest Service land at Trinity Point, improving access and opening new opportunities for recreation and future development.

The design includes major rock work, retaining walls, fish-passage and structural culverts, drainage improvements, trails, viewpoints, and coastal access, while working to limit clearing and preserve the character of the Passage Canal shoreline. With another construction season wrapping up, we’re proud to have a role in bringing that vision a little farther down the road.

We had a great time camping and hiking the trails around Caines Head near Seward with the CRW CReW and friends. The area features long beaches, lush temperate rainforests, and fascinating World War II history. We even managed to beat the incoming tide on our hike back, just barely!
