The region encompasses the majority of the Seward Peninsula and the coastal lands of eastern Norton Sound. Bering Straits Native Corporation, established in 1972 following the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, is a for-profit Alaska Native Corporation for the Bering Strait region. The region encompasses the majority of the Seward Peninsula and the coastal lands of eastern Norton Sound and is home to St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Central Yup’ik, and Inupiaq peoples. BSNC is owned by more than 8,300 shareholders and is one of the primary landholders in the region, accounting for more than two million acres of surface and subsurface estate. Headquartered in Nome, with a corporate office in Anchorage, BSNC’s mission is to improve the quality of life of Our People through economic development while protecting our land and preserving our culture and heritage. The Beringia Settlement Trust (BST) scholarship application for the Spring 2026 semester is now open, with a deadline of December 1. BSNC shareholders and descendants enrolled in accredited institutions or vocational programs are encouraged to apply. Scholarships are both needs- and merit-based, with funding subject to availability.

FUNDING AMOUNTS
Undergraduate Awards
Up to $2,000 for full-time attendance with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Up to $1,000 for part-time attendance with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Graduate Awards
Up to $3,000 for full-time attendance with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Up to $1,000 for part-time attendance with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Vocational Awards
Up to $2,000.

At a special meeting held Oct. 27, 2026, the BSNC Board of Directors appointed Silas Paniptchuk of Shaktoolik to fill the vacant Board seat previously held by Eugene Asicksik. Paniptchuk will serve the remainder of Asicksik’s term, which concludes at the 2027 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. Paniptchuk was selected from a pool of 35 applicants.

“We are pleased to welcome Silas to the Board of Directors,” said President Cindy Massie. “His longstanding commitment to education, community leadership, and preserving our traditional way of life reflects the values that guide BSNC. Silas brings valuable experience in governance and service to our region, along with a deep understanding of the needs of our communities. We look forward to the perspective and leadership he will bring to the Board.”

Paniptchuk brings more than two decades of experience in education, community service, and regional leadership. He has worked as a teacher with Kawerak since 2006 and currently serves on the Shaktoolik City Council. He previously served on the Bering Strait School District (BSSD) Board, BSSD’s Advisory Education Committee, and the Shaktoolik Tribal Council. He is also a commercial fisherman and head coach of the Shaktoolik boys basketball team.

Raised in Shaktoolik by his mother Ebba Paniptchuk and grandparents Jessie and Franklin Paniptchuk Sr., he continues to reside in the community with his wife, Stacey, and their three children.

BSNC congratulates descendants Wallace Ungwiluk and Darrin Topkok on receiving the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) President’s Awards. BSNC was honored to have nominated both descendants for this prestigious recognition.

Wallace Ungwiluk was honored with the Roger Lang Youth Leadership Award. Born in Nome and raised in Gambell, Ungwiluk developed a strong foundation in Alaska Native culture, subsistence living, and community values. After graduating from Apangalook High School in 2017, he pursued higher education in the Lower 48, earning bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Psychology, followed by a master’s degree in Management and Leadership from Multnomah University, while competing as a collegiate basketball player. He later served as an assistant coach for Lewis-Clark State College and continues to coach basketball in Gambell, mentoring student athletes in player development, academics, and leadership.

Darrin Topkok was honored with the Glenn Godfrey Law Enforcement Award. Topkok is an Alaska State Trooper whose life and work are deeply rooted in Western Alaska. His commitment to public service began at home in 2020, serving as a Village Public Safety Officer (VSPO) in the communities that supported and shaped him. He later served as a “Roving” VPSO throughout the region, an experience that deepened his dedication to public safety and inspired him to pursue a career with the Alaska State Troopers.
