If the light gets in under the door, so can a mouse.

Two inches of snow and Alaska's mice are already looking for somewhere warm. Here's a quick test for tonight: turn off the hallway light and look at the bottom of your exterior doors. If you can see light coming through, a mouse can get in there too. A young mouse can fit through a gap about the width of a pencil.

Trick-or-treaters are welcome at the door next week. Mice aren't.

Bed bugs do not care how clean your house is.

They are hitchhikers. They ride in on luggage, clothing, used furniture and overnight guests, then settle into seams and cracks near where people sleep.

That means a spotless home can get them, and so can a great hotel. It says nothing about you.

What it does mean: the sooner you confirm it, the easier it is to treat. If you are waking up with bites or finding small rust-colored spots on the sheets, do not wait and do not guess.

If a pencil fits, a mouse fits.

Take one on a lap around your house this week. Try the garage door corners, the door sweeps, and anywhere a pipe, wire or vent passes through the wall.

Every spot the pencil slides into is an open invitation.

Found a few? That is normal for an Alaska home after a few winters. We can seal them properly.

Bed bug bites are the great impostors, mistaken for mosquito bites, allergies, even new laundry detergent. The tell: bites in a line of 3 (pros call it "breakfast, lunch, and dinner"), worse in the morning, on skin exposed while you sleep.
