As much as we in the broader native plant world would prefer that most lawns were replaced by native gardens, the reality is that they are here to stay. Truth be told, I would much prefer to set my blanket down on lawn for picnic rather than a lumpy stand of prairie dropseed. But having a lawn doesn't mean it has to be a pox on our world. Simple things like letting other plants grow, beginning to mow later in the spring, and mulching leaves in place can make a huge difference to the functioning of the lawn as an ecosystem.

We offer mowing services because precisely because we see how your lawn is part of the ecosystem. And we can see where, simply by not mowing, a native garden of sedges, violets, spring beauties, and asters may show itself to already be in your garden.

At Adapt Landscapes, we understand that lawns are more than just grass. They are functional spaces where children play, bare feet wander, and blankets are spread for relaxation. While we will mow and maintain lawns, our approach seeks to move beyond the standard chemically treated monoculture. We primarily use electric mowers and overseed with native, nearly-native, or low-mow fescues that grow to no more than 12 inches, creating sustainable, low-maintenance lawns that are both functional and ecologically friendly. We're also happy to make it not lawn : ) and we are offering starter garden packages for an approachable step to lawn conversions.
