Fun fact: Did you know that this crazy looking bug on your left is actually a ladybug! The picture on your left is a ladybug in the larve state. And since they're busy trying to turn into the beautiful creature on your right they are extra hungry and love to eat things like aphids, millibug, and other plant eating bugs. So next time you see either one of these bugs, know mother nature is helping you out.

Gotta love our bipolar weather! Remember the best chance a plant has to survive these cold snaps is to water them. I know it sounds crazy but if you give your plants a thorough water right before a freeze you will see minimal damage. The water acts as an insulator around the roots of your plant. After your done watering cover them up with plastic, frost cloth, or even a blanket or sheet if your plants have new growth on them. Good luck and stay warm.

Everybody loves ROSES! Now is the best time to show these garden favorites some love. Now is perfect to do a hard prune and a good fertilizer treatment. Pruning can be a bit difficult so if you are not familiar with pruning a rose bush I suggest a youtube video or 2 (Perhaps one day I will have one of my own). By doing a large pruning you will encourage all sorts of healthy new growth. Then fertilze with a granular after loosening up the soil around the base of the plant. I love to use "happy frog" for roses. If soil is dry give it a drink. Happy Pruning!

Just because it's winter time doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of your favorite fresh herbs. Many herbs enjoy the cool weather but not freezing weather. So planting a few herbs such as cilantro, oregano, sage, thyme and chives, will all do great in a window that gets good light. Just be careful about how much water is being given. It is very easy to over water plants that get kept inside. Also, be sure to take off any decaying foilage to stimulate new growth. πŸŒΏπŸŒΏπŸŒΏβ„β„

BASIL, BASIL, BASIL everybody loves BASIL! So I had read a new way to propagate Basil. Most common way is by seed. However, after reading a Pinterest pin (gotta love Pinterest) I found out you can also propagate Basil by cutting a stem off and letting it root in a small jar of water. So of course I had to experiment and it worked like a charm. It was also surprisingly fast. So instead of waiting for a seed to germinate and root in your just waiting for it to re-establish itself.

Is it a moth, no its a hummingbird, no that's definitely a moth... So besides feeling the change in the air which sometimes isn't so noticeable here, one of my first indications that the seasons are changing (whether it be from winter to spring or summer to fall) is seeing the Sphinx Moth. More commonly called a "Hummingbird Moth" or a "hawk moth" in the scientific world they are known as Sphingidae. So to settle the argument they are most definitely part of the moth family. They start off as caterpillars (more specifically the "horned caterpillar" commonly seen munching on your tomatoes) and then become this awesome hovering moth that feeds off of nectar. Oh the the wonderful world of mother nature.

Just because summer is coming to an end doesn't mean the planting has to stop! Fall is an awesome time to get many of your plants in the ground. Right now is prime time to get most trees, shrubs, and cold hardy veggies in the ground. Things to stay away from planting this time of the year would be things like cactus, yuccas, summertime flowers like vinca and portulaca. I am more than happy to answer any specifics.
