Baby it’s cold outside and it is going to get colder—a lot colder! So, it is important to take steps to protect yourself and your home. Below are some suggestions for safeguarding yourself and your home. Please understand that these actions may keep your home from suffering frozen pipes and the resulting water damage. Additionally, they may protect you should there be a power outage.
Leave the cabinet doors under the sinks open in the kitchens and bathrooms when the outside temperature falls below 20 degrees. Have a fan blowing on the pipes to assist in reducing the chance of the pipes freezing. This allows warm air to circulate around the pipes, keeping them warmer. This is especially important on pipes on an outside wall.
Leave a trickle of water running from the kitchen and bathroom faucets. Allowing pipes to drip slightly relieves pressure in the plumbing system. Running water, even at a trickle, can help prevent pipes from freezing.
Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas of your home, such as the attic, basement, or crawl spaces. Pipe insulation can help maintain a higher temperature around the pipes and possibly prevent them from freezing.
Identity and seal any drafts or leaks in windows, doors, and walls. This helps maintain a warmer indoor environment and reduces the workload on your heating system.
Keep your thermostat at a consistent temperature, even when you’re away. Avoid significant temperature fluctuations to ensure that your home remains warm and comfortable.
Leave the doors to all rooms open for more even heat distribution. If you are going to be away from home, make sure the heat is set above 55 F.
Leave ceiling fans on to aid in more even heat distribution.
Keep the garage door closed when not in use.
Limit the use of a vaporizer, as too much humidity in your home may cause the excessive moisture to freeze on the inside of the windows.
DO NOT TRY TO HEAT YOU HOME WITH THE OVEN OR BURNER ON YOU RANGE!
IF YOU USE A SPACE HEATER, BE VERY MINDFUL OF THE DANGERS OF A FIRE!
As a precaution, prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, blankets, and non-perishable food items in case of power outages or other weather-related emergencies.
By taking these proactive steps, you can minimize the risks associated with freezing temperatures and ensure the well-being of your home and the safety of you and your family. Please stay warm and safe in this freezing winter weather!
