GOLDEN STORIES | Someone Stopped

You do not see that every day.

Driving on a Mesa freeway recently, I noticed a police officer changing a motorist’s tire. It was 96 degrees outside.

Usually, when I notice someone getting roadside help, there is a tow truck involved. This time, there was an officer down beside the wheel, doing the work.

I believe he was with Highway Patrol. What stayed with me was that someone needed help, and he was helping.

I do not know their names. I do not know what they said to each other. But I saw enough to appreciate the moment.

We pass people on the side of the road and hope help is coming. For this motorist, someone was already there.

“Service doesn’t end when you give the answer. It ends when the person is taken care of.”
— Jeremiah Alton, More Than Required

To the officer who helped: your kindness was noticed.

That is why I share these stories. Good people are doing good things, and those moments deserve our attention.

Who has stopped to help you when you needed it?

We spend a lot of time thinking about who we surround ourselves with. We should also consider what others experience when they spend time with us.

Do we encourage their dreams? Tell them the truth with kindness? Celebrate their progress? Follow through when they need us?

Faith belongs in that conversation, too. Talking about God at the table means something. Letting His love shape how we treat the people sitting there gives those words meaning.

This week, be intentional about what you bring. Listen carefully. Share what you know. Give someone credit. Help someone take their next step.

When someone leaves your table, what are they taking with them?

Most opportunities to make a difference don’t look important when they arrive.

They look like an interruption.

Someone who needs an extra minute.

A problem that technically belongs to somebody else.

A person standing alone.

Something out of place that would be easier to walk past.

A moment when you could help—but nobody would blame you if you didn’t.

That’s what makes these moments easy to miss.

You usually don’t know which small action someone will remember.

You don’t know which conversation they needed.

You don’t know how far one decision to care might travel.

So when you notice the moment, don’t assume someone else will take care of it.

Don’t walk past it.

Think about someone who changed the direction of your life.

Maybe they believed in you before you believed in yourself.

Maybe they gave you an opportunity.

Taught you something.

Corrected you when you needed it.

Encouraged you when quitting would have been easier.

Or maybe they did something small that they probably forgot—but you never did.

Here’s the strange part:

They may have no idea.

We often tell stories about the people who impacted us to everyone except the person who actually needs to hear it.

So this week, tell them.

And if you can’t tell them anymore, tell their story.

Say their name.

Tell people what they did.

Let their impact keep traveling.

Because some stories deserve to outlive the moment that created them.

Stories matter.

Sometimes people know exactly what the right thing to do is.

They just aren’t sure they’re allowed to do it.

So they wait.

They ask permission.

They look for someone with a bigger title.

And sometimes the moment passes.

Great cultures make expectations clear enough that people know where the boundaries are—and build enough trust that people feel confident acting within them.

That doesn’t mean there are no rules.

It means people understand the difference between needing authorization and simply needing courage.

When someone sees a problem they can solve, a person they can help, or something that needs to be made right, the goal shouldn’t always be:

“Who do I need to ask?”

Sometimes it should be:

“What can I do?”

Some people become almost invisible because they’re always there.

The person who opens the building every morning.

The one who stays a few minutes late.

The coworker who quietly fixes the problem before anyone knows there was one.

The person who remembers what everyone else forgets.

The one who keeps showing up.

Reliability has a strange consequence.

When someone does something well often enough, we can start treating it like it just happens.

It doesn’t.

Someone is making it happen.

This week, look for the person whose consistency has become so normal that people have stopped noticing it.

Then make sure they know you noticed.

Some of the best service I’ve ever experienced wasn’t memorable because of one grand gesture.

It was memorable because of the little things.

On a Japan Airlines flight, I started noticing them.

A wrapper fell to the floor. Within minutes, a flight attendant noticed it and picked it up.

A child dropped a toy. Someone noticed and returned it.

Then a child spilled yogurt on the floor. The crew cleaned it up without hesitation or complaint.

None of these things were extraordinary by themselves.

That’s exactly what made them extraordinary.

Nobody had to point out the wrapper.

Nobody had to ask someone to return the toy.

Nobody had to convince someone that the spill mattered.

They noticed.

And then they acted.

Sometimes remarkable service isn’t about doing something enormous.

Sometimes it’s simply caring enough to notice the small thing everyone else walked past.

Those are the details people remember.

Stories matter.

Standards matter.

They tell us what’s expected. They create consistency. They establish the minimum that should be done.

But a standard can only take you so far.

Eventually, nobody is watching.

Nobody is checking the details.

Nobody is standing over your shoulder asking whether you did it right.

That’s where pride takes over.

Pride is the extra look before you walk away.

It’s fixing something you could have ignored.

It’s doing it right even when doing less would have gone unnoticed.

The standard establishes what’s required.

Who you are determines what happens after the requirement ends.

Someone did something this week that made your life a little better.

Maybe they helped you.

Encouraged you.

Made you laugh when you needed it.

Solved a problem.

Showed up when they didn’t have to.

Or simply made you feel like you mattered.

Here’s the challenge:

Don’t just appreciate them silently. Tell them.

Send the text.

Make the call.

Walk across the room.

Leave the review.

Say their name.

Recognition doesn’t have to be complicated.

Before today ends, make sure someone knows they mattered.

And if their story deserves to be shared, tell us about them.

Everyone has a story.

Some are told often.

Some have never been told at all.

A person who gave you a chance when nobody else would.

A failure that changed the direction of your life.

A stranger whose kindness you still remember years later.

A moment when someone believed in you.

A lesson you learned the hard way.

Or maybe something you went through that could help someone else realize they aren’t standing alone.

Throughout October, I want to start finding more of those stories.

Not celebrity stories.

Not perfect stories.

Real people. Real moments.

Because somewhere out there, the experience you almost never talk about might be exactly what another person needs to hear.

So I'm asking:

What story do you think deserves to be told?

It can be yours, or it can belong to someone you believe deserves to be recognized.

Tell me below. You never know where one story might lead.

Stories matter.
