Homeowners in Central North Carolina already know what spring looks like: beautiful blooms, warmer days — and a whole lot of moisture. Between the rain, the rising humidity, and all that pollen, your home can quietly become the kind of environment where mold loves to settle in. The good news? A little proactive maintenance in the spring goes a long way. Here's what I'd recommend tackling before the heat and humidity really kick in.

Home moisture control tips for Central NC homeowners. Learn how gutters, drainage, ventilation, and dehumidifiers help prevent spring mold.

🌸 Spring in the Triangle is gorgeous — but it's also prime mold season for homeowners.

Rising humidity, heavy rainstorms, and leftover winter moisture create the perfect conditions for mold to take hold in your home. And it often starts in places you'd never think to look.

Before you get too deep into spring yard work and outdoor projects, take an hour to check these spots inside your home:

✅ Crawlspace (especially if you don't have a v***r barrier)
✅ Attic rafters and insulation
✅ Window sills and surrounding drywall
✅ Behind the washing machine and under sinks
✅ Your HVAC drain pan before you turn on the AC

Mold caught early is a minor fix. Mold discovered after months of growth? That's a much bigger conversation.

🎄 Storing Holiday Decorations? Read This First. 🏠

Most homeowners don’t realize that holiday decor is one of the most common hidden sources of mold inspectors find during home inspections.

Fabric wreaths, cardboard boxes, artificial trees—even sealed storage bins—can trap moisture and quietly grow mold while they sit in basements, garages, or attics all year long. The result? Musty smells, allergy flare-ups, and indoor air quality issues when decorating season rolls around again.

👉 In our latest blog, we break down what mold inspectors wish homeowners knew about holiday decor storage—including:
✔️ Why “dry” decorations aren’t always dry
✔️ The storage materials inspectors avoid
✔️ When decorations should be cleaned vs. thrown away
✔️ How storage location impacts mold growth

🎄 Your Holiday Decorations Could Be at Risk for Mold! 🎄

As the holiday season approaches, many of us are digging into our basements, attics, and garages to pull out those festive decorations. But did you know these storage spots can put your favorite ornaments at risk for mold and mildew? 😬

Poor ventilation, high humidity, and even moisture seeping through basement walls can lead to musty, damaged décor. And airtight storage containers? They keep air out—but they also trap moisture in, creating the perfect environment for mold to grow on fabrics, wood, glue, and more.

✨ How to Protect Your Decorations
✔️ Keep humidity between 30%–50% in storage areas
✔️ Use a small dehumidifier in your attic or basement
✔️ Consider placing a mini dehumidifier inside storage containers to prevent moisture buildup

✨ Can Moldy Decorations Be Saved?
Some items—like glass, ceramic, metal, and plastic—may be salvageable. Just avoid bleach! Hot water and dish soap can help, but always wear gloves and a mask when handling mold.

A dehumidifier can also help remove existing moisture and even improve musty odors over a few days.

🚨 When It Might Be Too Late
If you notice dark stains, white chalky residue, or widespread mold, the problem may go beyond your decorations. In that case, it’s best to call a professional mold cleanup company to assess the situation safely.

Don’t let moldy décor steal your holiday cheer! Take steps now to protect your cherished pieces and enjoy a fresher, safer holiday season. ❤️✨

🍂 Why Late Fall Is Prime Time for Mold in Raleigh Homes
When Raleigh homeowners think about mold, summer humidity usually comes to mind. But in truth, late fall is one of the most active seasons for mold growth in North Carolina. Cooler temperatures, leaf buildup, and frequent rainfall create ideal conditions for hidden moisture—and where moisture lingers, mold follows.
Understanding why this happens and what you can do now can save you from costly repairs and protect your home’s indoor air quality through the winter.

🌧️ 1. Wet Leaves Trap Moisture Around the Foundation
By November, Raleigh yards are buried in oak and maple leaves. When those leaves pile up against your home’s foundation, they trap moisture and block ventilation near crawlspaces. This damp environment encourages mold to form on siding, brick, and even inside vent openings.

Late fall brings hidden mold risks to Raleigh homes. Learn how to prevent moisture buildup and schedule your Raleigh mold inspection today.
