How Often Should I Water Newly Planted Shrubs & Trees?
One of the most common questions we get after a landscaping project is: “How often should I water everything?”
The short answer: Newly planted trees and shrubs need consistent watering, especially during their first growing season—but more water isn’t always better.
A good rule of thumb: Water deeply enough to thoroughly soak the root ball and surrounding soil, then allow the soil to begin drying before watering again.
For most newly planted trees and shrubs, that may mean watering every 2–3 days during hot, dry weather. Cooler temperatures or periods of rain may mean you can water less often.
The goal is to encourage roots to grow outward and establish themselves—not to keep the soil constantly soaked. Overwatering can be just as harmful as underwatering, particularly for evergreens and shrubs that don't like having consistently wet roots.
Before grabbing the hose, check the soil a few inches below the surface. If it still feels moist, you can probably wait. If it’s dry, it’s time for a good, deep watering.
Remember: Deep and thoughtful watering beats a quick daily sprinkle!
