Geographic Resource Solutions is presently planning our 2021 field season in Alaska. The field season is planned for June 14th - July 10, 2021 and cover portions of BLM's Central Yukon District's lands that were originally planned for sampling in 2020, but were delayed until this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Field crew members will convene in Fairbanks, AK on June 13th and depart for Tanana on Monday morning June 14th. We then plan to work out of Tanana through June 26th when we will depart for Hughes, sampling vegetation along the way! Field sampling efforts will continue from Hughes through July 10th, when the field crew plans to return to Fairbanks.

The 2020 field data collection effort for the Central Yukon Forest Inventory/Biomass Mapping Project has been postponed until 2021 due to the Covid-19 situation in Alaska and the need to keep the residents of the villages of Tanana and Hughes safe. We'd like to thank all those people, firms, and agencies that worked with us regarding the planning and implementation of this project. We look forward to working with them again in 2021 and wish them safety and peace as they continue to navigate through this crisis. Stay Safe!

Well the office has now been closed since March 16th. We are working at home, as we are able, on three different mapping/remote sensing projects:

We are in the final stages of the BLM Kuskokwim River Forest Inventory and Mapping Project (started in 2016) that covers nearly 5-million acres of BLM AK wildlands;

We are in the pixel classification map aggregation/review phase of the BLM Dalton Highway Management Corridor Forest Inventory Project (started in 2018) as we build stand type polygons to represent areas of different inventory characteristics to represent nearly 5-million acres of BLM wildlands; and

We are now in the planning stage of the BLM Central Yukon Forest Inventory Project that we hope to start this summer as we collect field data to represent the different forest characteristics we will be mapping. This project will encompass another 5-million acres of BLM wildlands.

All of these projects are based on Landsat 8 imagery and GRS field data collection efforts designed to acquire the species/landscape feature-specific map data sets developed using our Discrete Classification methodology.

Hopefully we will be able to travel to Alaska this summer and complete our anticipated field data collection activities as we have the past four years. I think we are ready for another field data collection adventure out to the middle of nowhere!
