Please join us in celebrating Dena McCullough—Humboldt County Builders Exchange Construction Person of the Year and the first woman to receive this incredible honor. There’s truly no one more deserving!

Her journey—from founding McCullough Construction in 1987 with her husband, Macky, to decades of leadership in both education and the trades—has been marked by faith, resilience, integrity, and unwavering dedication.

Dena is a powerhouse—not just in construction, but in education, mentorship, and advocacy. She’s a champion for youth, a fierce supporter of women in the trades, and a leader who lifts everyone around her.

For those of us lucky enough to work under her guidance, Dena is not just our boss—she’s our mentor, our protector, and a force for good in every life she touches.

Here’s to you, Dena—thank you for building more than just construction projects. You’re building a legacy. 🛠️🤍

Dena McCullough, of McCullough Construction Inc., is shown with Pat Hooven, HBE President, and Jason Jordan, HBE Vice President. at the Installation Dinner last Thursday. Dena received the 2025 Construction Person of the Year and is the first woman to be so honored. She is a trailblazer in Humboldt County. In 1987, Dena and Macky started McCullough Construction Inc., and over the decades, Dana has uplifted many women in the construction industry while serving on many boards, including our HBE Board. We are proud and grateful to call her an HBE member and honoree.

Jack Peters Creek Soffit & Girder Wall Pour

Yesterday we poured 240CY of concrete with the help of multiple Powell Landscape boom pump trucks! The Soffit and Girder walls are key components in the superstructure of the bridge, which will support the final bridge deck. This project will widen the existing bridge to create a safer travel way for the public on CA Highway 1.

The crews at the Cushing Creek Soldier Pile Wall project achieved two milestones this week while working parallel critical paths. They completed the concrete pour for tie back waler row 4 (of 5 total) for wall construction and also completed grading for asphalt placement. Both goals were complicated by adverse weather and site logistics but they made it happen safely and with top quality.

Subcontractors:

• Drill Tech Drilling & Shoring
• Kernen Construction
• Powell Concrete Pumping
• SHN Consulting Engineers

Sanctuary Forest staff and board toured our North Fork Lost River project site on Friday – a tributary of the Mattole River—where two streamflow augmentation ponds that were engineered for us by Stillwater Sciences are being completed by McCullough Construction. Mattole Salmon Group, acting as subcontractors for Sanctuary Forest, are also implementing streamflow and habitat enhancement that includes reconnecting floodplains: they are installing salmon habitat structures and log weirs in order to slow, spread and sink the water, which will help recharge the groundwater and raise the level of the stream onto the floodplain.

Project site photos coming soon!

Inter-Fluve has been working with Sonoma Water on the restoration of Dry Creek since 2008. On Tuesday, we attended the ground breaking ceremony for the next phase of the project. Thanks to San Francisco District, US Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, The Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, McCullough Construction Inc., and the many vineyards and wineries who have supported this immense job.
