Maybe it was the flowering dogwood you climbed as a kid.....or the oak you got married under.....or the maple you planted in honor of a loved one.
For most of us, trees, animals and nature play a special role in our lives, but how do you translate that emotion into a commitment to conservation?
That story of conservation through emotional connection is at the "root" of the largest capital project in Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's history: Primate Rainforest. The goal of this new experience is to reinforce the interconnectedness of people, animals and habitats, and the journey begins in the CrossCountry Mortgage Forest Home.
When Adirondack Studios was introduced to the Primate Forest project, Local Projects and the Zoo had already developed a strong artistic intent. Our initial scope was to confirm that their intricate vision for the Mother Tree, the dramatic centerpiece of Forest Home, was experientially achievable. Through various iterations of mockups, we confirmed that the Mother Tree, even with its complex integration of interactivity, lighting, sound and media, could not only be functionally and operationally achievable, but a true "wow" moment for Zoo visitors.
From those initial seeds of prototyping Local Projects' designs, our scope under Higley Construction grew to comprise final drawings, fabrication and installation of all the physical theming elements of Forest Home, including scenic flooring, trees, rocks, the foliage canopy and of course, the Mother Tree. The resulting scene beautifully complements the immersive projection mapped media of Local Projects, Electrosonic, and PIXERA, and the lighting of Illuminated Integration.
While we wanted the Forest Home to have a mystical storytelling quality, we knew that the Zoo's vision for the space would be best achieved with hyper-realism. From peeling birch bark to native fungi, we created the trees to be indicative of the species visitors would see outside the Zoo's Northwest Ohio doors. We can't wait for visitors to discover the little surprises dotted among the branches, embedded in the trunks, and scattered along the forest floor.
In addition to the Forest Home, our scope included the 200 curved wooden fins throughout the Michael Talty and Helen Talty Charitable Trust Learning Gallery, the faux rockwork kiosks in the Cleveland Foundation Sustainable Future Design Lab, and the monitor enclosures in the Lubrizol Connections Studio.
