Check out this corroded pipe removed from an old Boston brownstone. Wondering what happened? It’s electrolysis!

Directly joining different types of metals — in this case, a galvanized steel pipe and copper — caused the rapid corrosion of the steel pipe.

Steel and copper are considered to be dissimilar metals. When they are in direct contact with each other, along with water, electrolysis occurs.

Now you know.
