In 2024-2025, our lab only received 59 submissions of groundhog ticks. These ticks are part of the genus Ixodes, the same as blacklegged deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and western blacklegged deer ticks (Ixodes pacificus). What does this announcement actually mean for Lyme patients?

Last week, HHS announced several new initiatives focused on Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

In plain language, this means the federal government is investing more money into Lyme disease research, improving diagnostics, exploring treatment innovations, increasing public awareness, and helping patients connect with knowledgeable providers.

They do not jump or fly, but climb up from low-lying vegetation onto shoes or legs, often crawling up to find a warm, dark and protected areas to bite.

When a suitable host passes by, the tick extends its front barbed legs, grabbing it’s host and then searches for an ideal area on a host to take it’s blood meal.

One species of tick, the Lonestar tick, has a very different approach. They actively hunt for a host. They aren’t about hanging around, patiently questing. They actively seek out their hosts by crawling towards them.
