NGS published a Federal Register Notice to inform the public about the updated timeline and process for rolling out the modernized National Spatial Reference System. Using modern, space-based geodetic surveying technology; extensive data collection initiatives; and advances in scientific knowledge, NOAA will replace all three North American Datum of 1983 frames and all vertical datums, including the North American Vertical Datum of 1988, with four new terrestrial reference frames and one new geopotential datum. These changes, which are a culmination of over 17 years of work, will make the national coordinate system more accurate, accessible, interoperable, and sustainable. NOAA will roll out components of the modernized system over time, from 2024 to 2026, after public testing and feedback.
