Pipe exits: Open end or pop up emitter?

Choose a clean, open end (daylight outlet) if you have enough slope and want maximum, unobstructed water flow. Choose a pop-up emitter only if the pipe terminates in a flat or elevated area where water cannot naturally flow away, or if you need to protect the end from lawnmowers.

What is downspout drainage?
Downspout drainage is a system designed to channel rainwater from a building's roof gutters safely away from its foundation. By diverting large volumes of water, it prevents basement flooding, foundation damage, soil erosion, and landscape washout.

Common drainage options:

Above-Ground Extensions: Simple plastic, aluminum, or roll-out extensions attached to the bottom of a downspout. They direct water a few feet further out onto the lawn but can be tripping hazards or obstacles when mowing.

Buried Underground Pipes: A more permanent solution where downspouts connect to solid PVC or corrugated pipes. These run underground and carry water away to the street, a storm drain, or a dry well.

Pop-Up Emitters: Often used with underground systems, these lie flush with your grass. When water flows through the buried pipe, the water pressure forces the top of the emitter to pop up and safely disperse the water onto the lawn.

French Drains & Dry Wells: Downspouts can sometimes be tied into perforated pipe systems wrapped in gravel and filter fabric to slowly disperse water into the ground without flooding the surface.
