As people reach for leaf blowers and rake to rid their property of leaves, please consider the healthy benefits of leaves. They break down into compost and feed the soil. They provide habitat for wildlife and larvae for caterpillars and other beneficial insects that are critical to feed birds in the spring and provide beauty. Don't chip up or mow your leaves, or you'll kill the larvae.
You can reduce the amount of lawn by using leaves to smother areas of your lawn that you want to transform into planting beds. Rake them off of lawn that you want to keep, and use them in beds and compost piles.
