It has been rough y’all. I never imagined experiencing something like hurricane Helene in the Appalachian mountains. More on that later, but for now, we had some good moments the last few days. Halloween on Vermont Avenue, dance class and dinner with friends, co leading a mushroom inoculation class, a neighborhood cider pressing day and then baby ducklings hatching at my mom’s ❤️

Asheville area folks...we are leading a free compost toilet workshop today, Monday Oct 7, at Hall Fletcher Elementary in West Asheville (60 Ridgelawn Rd, 28806) at 6:30pm.

"Wondering what to do with your p**p when our 'normal' ways of living go down the toilet? Composting toilets can turn p**p into soil and does not use water." Bring 5 gallon buckets if you have them. Also composting toilets need wood shavings, sawdust and/or leaves. If you have extra, please bring to gift to others.

If you have a saw dust or wood shavings source, please contact me.

There are many that do not have toilets that flush, even with non-potable water.

We are safe. The Ruby Ranch NC is ok. All horses and humans are safe. We had a hillside pasture emergency plan that worked. 3 mudslides up the road. Almost all of the bridges around us blew out except ours. A huge amount of gratitude to Kevin Harding, Just W Kibbe, Cassie Marler and Slater for being incredible and stepping up making decisions that made things better for the Ranch and all its inhabitants.

Town was hit hard. Soooo many places destroyed. We have no electricity, water or cell service. We do have reception at the so when I am here, I can check in with you all.

Thank you for all of your words of support and love during this time ❤️

We made it into the The Laurel of Asheville! Come check out our gardens on the West Asheville Garden Stroll tomorrow, Sept 14th, from 11-3:30. "Garden tours are a wonderful way for people to learn and share the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of what they are doing. I always tell my students to visit as many gardens as possible; there is always so much to learn from each other!”

The West Asheville Garden Stroll (WAGS) returns for the 15th year, fittingly featuring 15 gardens in the Horney Heights neighborhood along Sulphur Springs Road. On Saturday, September 14, the event will begin with a kick-off at 10:30 a.m. at Lucy Herring School.

These photos were taken about two hours apart. I was hoping to get a few more shots of it opening, but honestly did not think it would happen so fast and had cover dinner and my daughter’s bedtime routine. Amazing!!

Our Story

At YummyYards, we believe our outdoor spaces should be beautiful and sometimes yummy! You may want your yard to be yummy to birds, butterflies, yourself, your kids, or your neighborhood. We work with clients to build soil fertility, grow vegetables, plant fruit trees and shrubs, raise chickens and bees, and more, to make your outdoor space exactly how you dream it to be. We are also really skilled in helping you realize your dreaming potential and then make sure it happens.

YummyYards was started while it’s founder, Laura Ruby, was working with a non profit that installed veggie gardens at elementary schools. She soon became not just the garden designer and maintainer, but quickly became an educator, helping teacher learn how to engage students in the outdoor environment. What’s pretty neat is that kids will eat what they grow. Soon, parents were asking me if I could install gardens at their homes because they were noticing their kids were eating more vegetables since the school gardens went in. Soon, YummyYards was born.

We now offer consultations from 1 to 6 hours long depending on your needs. We offer hand drawn plans as well as Landscape Architect plans, thanks to Bare Root Designs. We can complete projects with our crew, or work with you if you want to learn more about plants. We offer garden projects and programs for families and for kids. We host permaculture courses and can mentor you on your project in person or over video chat, or both. So, please be in touch! We are here to help you create that magical outdoor oasis :)
