Summer has 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 begun, and your landscape is feeling the heat too!

A few simple steps can help keep your property healthy and thriving through the hottest months of the year:

☀️ Water deeply and less frequently to encourage stronger root growth
🍂 Refresh mulch to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature
🌱 Keep an eye out for heat stress, especially on new plantings and young trees
✂️ Remove spent blooms and light summer growth to keep beds looking fresh
💧 Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation and plant stress
🌳 Prioritize trees during dry periods... they’re one of the most valuable parts of your landscape!

With the right maintenance and planning, landscapes can continue to thrive even through Virginia’s summer heat.

Four words prevent more landscape problems than almost anything else we do: right plant, right place.

Every plant has conditions where it naturally thrives, sun exposure, soil moisture, drainage, airflow, even soil composition. Match the plant to the site, and it settles in beautifully. Fight those conditions, and you’ll spend every season trying to keep it alive.

A few examples we see constantly in Central Virginia landscapes:

🌼 Hydrangea macrophylla in harsh afternoon sun → scorched leaves and constant wilting. Most bigleaf hydrangeas perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade in our climate.

🌿 Boxwood planted in poorly drained clay → stress, decline, and eventual root issues. Boxwoods prefer well-drained soil and don’t love “wet feet.”

🪻 Lavender planted directly into dense Virginia clay → weak growth and dieback over time. Lavender thrives in lean, gritty, fast-draining soil with plenty of sun and airflow.

🌺 Azaleas planted in soggy clay → yellowing leaves, poor performance, and root problems. Azaleas prefer acidic, organic-rich soil with consistent moisture but excellent drainage.

🌻 Native Black-Eyed Susan in a hot, dry strip → absolutely thrives. Tough, heat-loving, pollinator-friendly, and happy in conditions that make many other perennials struggle.

Beautiful landscapes aren’t just about choosing beautiful plants. They’re about choosing plants that actually want to be there.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. 🇺🇸

At James River Nurseries, we spend our days helping create spaces meant to be lived in, gathered in, and enjoyed for generations. There’s no better place than the great outdoors to reflect, remember, and appreciate the freedoms we’re fortunate to have.

Today, we’re especially grateful for those who made those freedoms possible.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day weekend. ❤️🤍💙

Last week, we took some time to celebrate the incredible team behind James River Nurseries with a company cookout filled with homemade food, good conversation, and a lot of appreciation.

Eric handled the BBQ, Joanne brought homemade mac salad, and Doug and Robbie kept the burgers and hot dogs going for the crew. Just about everything was homemade and put together by the JRN team for the JRN team — which honestly says a lot about who we are.

We’re incredibly grateful for the people who show up every day, work hard, support one another, and help make JRN what it is. We truly are a family here, and we love any opportunity to serve and celebrate our team. ❤️🍔

By July, you’ll know which neighbor planted shade trees fifteen years ago...

A mature tree canopy can lower ambient temperatures by 10–15°F beneath its reach. That’s not marketing, that’s the difference between a yard you avoid in August and one you actually live in.

Three trees we love specifying for Central Virginia properties, looking for long-term beauty and relief from the heat:

🌳 Willow Oak (Quercus phellos) — a Richmond classic known for its graceful canopy, fast growth for an oak, and strong adaptability to our climate.

🌳 Red Maple (Acer rubrum) — quick-growing with brilliant fall color and excellent tolerance for Central Virginia’s clay soils.

🌳 Black Gum (Nyssa sylvatica) — an underrated native with incredible scarlet fall color, strong resilience, and a refined shape that works beautifully in both natural and formal landscapes.

The best time to plant a shade tree was twenty years ago... but the second-best time is now! Reach out via below or in bio, we're already booking installs into the fall!

Happy Earth Day 🌎🌿

Last week, our team had the opportunity to tour Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden with Central Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association, and it was one of those moments where you step back and take it all in.

We are incredibly proud to have played a role in this transformative work, helping support long-term plant health through thoughtful soil blends, the use of native and non-invasive plantings, and sustainable installation practices that allow these spaces to thrive for years to come.

It’s even more meaningful to see our work alongside so many talented landscape architects, designers, and teams who brought their vision to life here. The level of care in every detail really shows.

We can’t wait for the community to experience it.
