Morning coffee on the back patio, anyone — five steps from bed, no big production?

This primary suite addition backs right up to a patio with pavers set to an intentionally uneven edge, so it settles into the yard and summer greenery instead of squaring off against it. The back yard offers peace and seclusion. Walk-in closets, a gym, a walk-in tub — all the everyday indoor stuff is great too, built for the long haul.

We moved the garage doors to the back of the house for this one, which freed up room for a bigger covered porch out front too. And nicer landscaping to boot. Happy summer.

Sometimes the site tells you exactly where the house goes. Here, the existing foundation and the proximity to the water decided that for us — so the design worked forward from there.

This elegant cedar-shingled custom home sits by a lake, now overlooked by a large deck that makes the absolute most of summer waterfront living. A covered walkway ties the detached garage and in-law suite straight to the front entry — rain or shine, no detour required.

Summer doesn't have to end at the first sign of rain or chill.

This rear addition provided a bigger kitchen and a room with accordion doors that fold the whole wall open in summer. Step outside to a bluestone patio built for hanging out — an outdoor kitchen at one end, and a hot tub at the other, lit low for the kind of night where you're in no hurry to go back in.

The best thing about this house is that you can't quite tell where it ends.
Slide the doors open and the dining room and the porch become one room. Breakfast is inside or outside depending on the morning. The living room faces a wall of glass that isn't a wall anymore.

From there it steps down... a covered porch with a TV and a sectional, a gravel court with chairs pulled around a firepit, a screened deck off the side where the yoga mats live. Four ways to be outdoors, each a little more outdoors than the last.
