A trailer may look secure at the dock. That doesn't always mean it is.

Unexpected trailer movement during loading and unloading can create serious safety hazards for employees and equipment.

That's why many facilities rely on vehicle restraint systems as part of their dock safety program. Properly securing the trailer helps create a safer loading environment while giving forklift operators greater confidence moving in and out of the trailer.

Rotary Products Inc. offers loading dock equipment designed to help facilities improve safety and efficiency every day.

Before you order dock equipment, answer these questions first.

A lot of dock equipment problems can be prevented by getting the right information before an order is placed. Here’s what actually matters.

Is your dock approach level, inclined, or declined?
The approach angle affects how a trailer sits against the building. On a level approach, a 4-inch bumper projection is typically appropriate. On a declined approach, greater projection may be needed to help keep the top of the trailer from contacting the building.

What kinds of trucks and trailers use your dock?
Trailer height, dock height, rear steps or bumpers, and other truck dimensions can affect how dock equipment needs to be sized and configured. The equipment has to work with the vehicles that actually show up at your facility.

Do you have enough side room and head room?
Available clearance around the opening matters, especially when selecting and sizing dock seals and truck shelters. Taking accurate measurements before ordering can prevent installation and fit problems later.

What bumper projection does your dock require?
There isn’t one answer for every dock. Approach conditions and the relationship between the trailer and building need to be considered when determining the right projection.

Do you need a dock seal or a truck shelter?
It isn’t just a matter of preference. Available space, truck and trailer dimensions, and how much access you need to the trailer opening all play a role in choosing the right option.

These are the kinds of details worth working through before equipment is built.

Rotary Products manufactures custom loading dock equipment and works with customers and dealers to make sure the equipment is designed for the application.
Getting the measurements and specifications right up front can help prevent expensive changes later.

What does Rotary Products Inc. actually do?

We design and manufacture loading dock and warehouse safety equipment, and we mean the whole dock, not just one piece of it. Dock seals, truck shelters, dock bumpers, dockboards, levelers, wheel chocks, safety barriers, air doors, snow/rain hoods, yard ramps. If it's part of getting a trailer safely in and out of your facility, there's a good chance we manufacture it.

Who we serve: Warehouse managers, facility teams, and businesses across North America who need loading dock equipment that's built for their exact setup, not a one-size-fits-all product pulled off a shelf.

How we help: Every dock is different. Different truck heights, different bay widths, different traffic patterns. Because we manufacture what we sell, our team can help you figure out exactly what your facility needs before you order, not after something doesn't fit. We sell through a network of dealers who can measure, specify, install, and service what you need.

Based in Ashley, Ohio. Solving loading dock problems since 1958.

Not all dock bumpers are created equal and using the wrong size can cost you.

A lot of facilities install whatever bumper "fits" without considering their specific dock setup. But the right bumper depends on a few key factors:

- Dock type matters. A 6″ bumper is typically used on lip docks where the slab projects beyond the foundation, while 10″ bumpers are the standard choice for docks handling trucks of fairly uniform height.

- Heavier traffic needs more steel. A 12″ bumper is a heavier build with a stronger steel frame, giving it more rubber area to absorb impact.

- Mixed fleet? Go vertical. For docks that see a mix of truck heights — panel trucks, pup trailers, over-the-road rigs — taller vertical units (20″, 24″, or 36″) provide extended protection. They're especially important on docks with truck levelers that raise the trailer to dock height, since pairing vertical and horizontal bumpers keeps a loaded trailer from prying the shorter bumpers loose as the bed rises during unloading.

Refrigerated dock? Those need extra-length, one-piece bumpers 4-1/2″ or 6″ thick to fully seal the truck to the dock or shelter and maintain temperature control.

The bottom line: dock bumpers aren't a "grab and go" purchase. Height, spacing, and configuration all depend on your dock's layout and the trucks you're servicing.

The gap may be small, but what passes through it can create much bigger problems.

Brush seals conform to uneven surfaces, helping close gaps that traditional weather stripping may miss. At loading docks, doors, windows, conveyors, machinery, and other openings, they can help control:

• Outside air and temperature loss
• Dirt, dust, fumes, and pests
• Light and sound transfer
• Flying chips and splashing liquids
• Material escaping from conveyor systems

Rotary Products brush seals are made with nylon bristles and aluminum mounting brackets and can be customized for a range of industrial, commercial, and residential applications.

Choosing a Dockboard or Dockplate? Answer These 4 Questions First

Picking the right dockboard isn't guesswork, it comes down to specifics. Before you order, know your answers to:

1️⃣ What's the largest height differential between your dock and the truck bed?
2️⃣ What usable width do you actually need?
3️⃣ What's the heaviest load crossing that plate or board?
4️⃣ What's driving over it: pallet jacks, electric pallet jacks, or gas/propane forklifts?

RPI offers aluminum and steel dockboards and dockplates in hundreds of sizes, with quick ship available on select sizes. And here's a detail many people don't know: the height differential a dockboard can safely handle depends on what's driving over it — gas and propane forklifts can handle a steeper grade than electric pallet jacks, simply because of ground clearance.

Get the specs wrong and you've got a safety hazard. Get them right, and your dock runs smoothly for years.

Wheel Chocks: Not All Chocks Are Created Equal

A Wheel Chock Isn't Just a Wheel Chock
Quick question for your facility: are your wheel chocks actually rated for what's rolling over your dock?

RPI carries chocks for every duty level:
🔹 Heavy-duty recycled rubber chocks built from laminated pads compressed between steel plates
🔹 Lightweight molded urethane chocks contoured to fit truck tires
🔹 Non-sparking aluminum chocks with gripping teeth on the underside — ideal where sparks are a hazard
🔹 Economical molded rubber chocks for everyday trailer truck use

And it's not just about the chock itself. Proper storage and signage matter too. A dedicated wall hanger keeps chocks visible and accessible for drivers, exactly how OSHA recommends.

The right chock, in the right spot, every time. That's how you actually prevent rollaway accidents.
