From Humble Beginnigs...

The story of R.W. Sidley begins with a wheelbarrow, a pickaxe, and some land in Thompson, OH. From those small beginnings emerged a company that has spanned across multiple generations, businesses, and regions. Established in 1933 and incorporated in 1938, our company will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2018. The management team recognizes this rarity for a family business:

Today Bob Buescher, the 3rd generation, mans the ship in the President and CEO role. Something particularly special is the 83-year-old Board Chairman and former CEO of 39 years (Bob Sidley) who still comes to the office every day, including weekly management meetings, driven by the pure passion he has for the business.R.W. Sidley’s evolving product and service offerings over the years are a great example of the successful use of vertical integration. Beginning simply with sand and stone, founder Robert W. Sidley quickly realized he could use the silica sand, gravel, and concrete for many additional offerings to customers. In chronological order:

-1933 – founder Robert W. (RW) started a Sand & Gravel operation. Today our sand and stone offerings service many different markets and applications including golf sand, filter media, frac sand, and much more

-1943 - Leveraging his experience with the trucks used for his sand and gravel operation, RW became a Truck Dealer. Today we have the oldest continuously-owned Mack dealership in the country

-1947 - RW purchased his first Ready Mix Concrete Mixer and entered the concrete industry. Today we have a large fleet ready mix trucks and many ready mix plants in operation in both Ohio and Pennsylvania.

-1962 – the founder’s son Robert C. (RC) purchased a Precast Concrete operation, entering the precast concrete products and services market. Today we provide precast products to million-dollar projects across the Northeastern U.S. Just in downtown Cleveland alone this includes the Hilton Hotel, First Energy Stadium and Progressive Field, Global Center for Health Innovation, various parking garages, and much more.

-1962 RC purchased a dock in Ashtabula to ship stone by barge. Today we have 2 docks (another in Grand River, OH).

-1962 RC purchased a Building Supply company, entering the building supply products market

-1967 RC built the Casement Golf Course. Today we offer the highest quality bunker sand (Pro/Angle) available, along with various other golf-industry products

-1982 RC built a Concrete Block Plant, expanding concrete product offerings to include block, brick, and briquette products

-1986 RC purchased a Trucking company (J.P. Jenks), entering the truck-hauling industry

-2000’s current CEO Bob Buescher (BB) led an expansion of the Ready Mix Concrete division, acquiring many businesses to expand Sidley’s reach

-2010’s Sidley expanded its aggregate operation capacity and added a dryer, expanding stone/sand product offerings

The various product and service expansions over the years are merely examples of Sidley’s management team taking advantage of opportunities to help more people in even more ways than we could before – whether they’re builders, homeowners, tradesmen and tradeswomen, and more. We strive to be a one-stop-shop for our customer’s Construction Material Solution needs – the depth of our diverse portfolio of products and services emphasizes this. On top of our products and services, we offer a level of personal touch only a family business can provide.
