The season is just about over. I use my bagger to get leaves up, so my mower runs later than most . If you are still mowing, make sure to run the tank completely dry next time. Better yet, if you have quite a bit, just use your extra gas to mow the neighbors, a vet's, or an elderly persons yard till the gas is completely gone. If your neighbors doesn't take kind to a 1/2 mowed yard, an alternative would be to get a fuel shut off valve(pictured below) and install inline to the carburetor. Then you just turn the shut off perpendicular and start the mower, then run it until all the gas in the carburetor runs out completely. Keep in mind that most gas is only good for about 3 months now, so I think emptying it all out is the better option, but the valve is still another option, but add some sta-bil or startron to stabilize and make your machine more likely to start in the spring.
Install a shut-off valve on your mower
Pinch the fuel line coming from the fuel tank with forceps or needle nose vice grips to cut off more fuel from spilling.
Cut off about 3/4" section of fuel line.
Slide a clamp on to each side of where you are to put the shut-off, and slide them over as much as possible.
Install the shut-off by inserting the tips into the 1/4" hose and then use pliers to pull the clamps over to pinch onto the barb area of the shut-off.
Remove your forceps or gas Pinchers, and the flow is restored.
Straight through is open, and perpindicular is closed.
