David Johnston Architects, based in Aspen, Colorado, offers large-firm residential and commercial architectural, planning & development and interior design resources with a small firm’s ability to provide individualized attention. After working for several years in Aspen, David Johnston started his firm in 1997 with a vision of helping clients fulfill their architectural aspirations through a crea

tive and courteous approach. Today, David Johnston Architects is a full-service Aspen architecture and planning firm with a team of designers, planners, project managers and production staff who are passionate about quality design and hands-on service for residential, commercial and mixed use projects. David Johnston Architects encourages constant client-architect communication. From initial site analysis and schematic concept to finished design drawings, construction documents and construction administration, the team at David Johnston Architects guides clients through the creative journey of designing and building a home or project. Seeking out projects that vary in size, style and function, David Johnston Architects doesn’t have a “look.” The firm’s residential architecture portfolio spans styles from American Farmhouse, Contemporary and Colorado Mountain to French Country, Tuscan and English Cottage, and the starting point for all designs is the client’s goals. As the backbone of the company, architectural services have historically focused around residential design in Aspen, but have expanded into commercial and larger, more complex projects including mixed-use, commercial and multifamily development. All size and level of design are approached with the same intensity, whether providing services for a small kitchen remodel, complete renovation of an existing residence, or a unique new home. Regardless of the scope or scale, DJA’s integrated approach remains constant.

Chaparral Ranch brings together equestrian function, traditional craftsmanship, and the natural beauty of Woody Creek.

As a shared amenity for ten residences, the equestrian center features a 20-stall horse barn and 20,000-square-foot indoor riding arena, built with post-and-beam timber construction. From the ranch entry gate to the surrounding water feature and mountain views, each element was designed to feel connected to the landscape.

Today, the property serves not only its equestrian community but also as a memorable setting for weddings and special events.

DJArchitects is reimagining a Victorian-era mining cabin in Aspen’s East End as an elevated single-family residence. Inspired by Aspen’s mining era, the design pairs texture and natural materials with a contemporary architectural language. At the heart of the site, a courtyard draws daylight and fresh air deep into the home, creating a quiet connection between the original cabin and its modern addition.

Openings are carefully positioned to frame views, capture shifting mountain light, and establish a dialogue between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. Just four blocks from the Silver Queen Gondola, this full redevelopment honors Aspen’s working-class past while embracing contemporary mountain living.

Leaving the mountains for a project on the coast of California! DJArchitect’s design for this Montecito clothing store created a clean canvas for its collection of emerging designers from the U.S., Europe and Japan. The space uses concrete, steel, glass, and natural walnut in a restrained architectural palette allowing the clothing to take center stage.
