Athens Citizen's Development Committee

Athens Citizen's Development Committee A committee of Athens Town and Village residents concerned about the impact of the proposed construction projects which will directly affect Athens.

This Committee is comprised of Town and Village residents of Athens, Greene County, who are concerned about the impact of power line proposals which will directly affect Athens. These proposals are in response to the Governor’s Energy Highway Blueprint. Click link for more info on the West Point Partners, LLC application:

The mission of the Athens Citizens Development Committee is to maintain and protect the existing quality of life in Athens. To ensure that development occurs in an appropriate manner and is compatible with the small town identity of the community while contributing substantially to the economic base. The Committee is concerned with the five proposals before the NYS Public Service Commission which would affect Athens. These proposals are from:
- West Point Partners, LLC

- North American Transmission

- NextEra Energy Transmission

- New York Transmission Owners

- Boundless Energy NE

The Committee recognizes that the Town and Village of Athens has filed for party status with the Public Service Commission for the above proposals. However, the most invasive proposal is from West Point Partners, LLC which would result in a buried DC line that would negatively impact the residential and historic district in the Village of Athens. The Committee asks that the Town and Village of Athens pass a resolution against the proposal by West Point Partners, LLC. There remains concerns about the lack of information given to the public on the above projects. The Committee would like a concise and transparent model of all five proposals from the NYS Public Service Commission. Due to the amount of confusion with regard to the above projects, the Committee demands that the Public Service Commission hold a public meeting in Athens to explain in detail each proposal and the cumulative impact of all of the above proposals on Athens. Athens Village Board to vote tonight on resolution about proposed Coxsackie-Athens schools reorganization plan
Unpopular plan is focus of community dissatisfaction
Athens Town Democratic candidates Pirrone, Dinkelacker and Gardner stand in opposition to plan

A proposed plan by the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District (CACSD) to reorganize district schools with a net effect of shifting the location of certain lower grade levels and busing small children from E.J. Arthur Elementary School in Athens to school buildings in Coxsackie is under fire by many in the community.

The plan already has been the subject of a number of public hearings sponsored by the CACSD, presentations, and newspaper articles. A number of Athens Village Board members have come out in opposition to the plan, and tonight the full Athens Village Board is poised to officially resolve its opposition.

Athens Town Democratic candidates Michael Pirrone, Phyllis Dinkelacker, and Cari Gardner oppose the plan.

Neither the Athens Village Board nor the Athens Town Board have legal or administrative authority over the CACSD, so tonight's Village Board vote will be a statement of community sentiment and is not binding on CACSD.

The Village board meeting tonight (Wednesday, October 27) starts at 6:30 and the proposed resolution in opposition to the Grade Reconfiguration is fourth on the agenda.

The meeting will be held in person at the Athens Firehouse, 39 3rd Street, and the Village Board is also trying a new hybrid remote/in-person method. The public is invited to participate live or via this Zoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/6278758374, or dial in at: (646) 558-8656 using meeting ID: 627 875 8374.

The agenda for tonight's Village Board meeting is available here. The full resolution that the Village Board will be considering for the school reorganization opposition resolution (agenda item #4) is available here. Town Meeting About the Future of the Community Center TOMORROW
"SHORT NOTICE" FOR MEETING TOMORROW, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 7PM, ATHENS FIREHOUSE!

You may know that both the Village government and the Town government are housed in the historic Athens Community Center on First Street. A 1905 picture of the building is our masthead .

The building is in need of extensive renovation. Currently, the Village owns the building and rents part of it to the Town. The Village does not have the resources to renovate the building but the Town does. The Town agreed to purchase the building from the Village, renovate it, and then rent the space back to the Village.

Now, some Town officials want to go back on that agreement in order to move Town government to a new building that would be purpose-built on 9W. The idea would be to find a developer to buy the Community Center and perhaps turn it into apartments.

The Town Board will be considering this issue at its meeting tomorrow evening, September 7th, 7pm at the Athens Firehouse, 39 3rd Street. Since this is an important issue for the Town and the Village, we are encouraging folks to show up to hear the conversation and make your opinion known.

A decision to go back on the prior agreement should not be made by a handful of people!

Attached is the video from The C&D Project meeting at the Athens Firehouse on Sunday 3/1. Please take a listen or listen again, if you were there. It is unbelievable! This project would erode the quality of life in Athens! The peaceful village we now call home would be destroyed. Citizens must take a stand.
