As a local contractor with a capable crew, we have spent the last twenty-four hours traveling throughout Union Lake and Union City offering assistance wherever we can. What we have witnessed during that time has been both remarkable and deeply troubling.

On one hand, there has been an incredible outpouring of support from the community. Neighbors helping neighbors, families helping families, and volunteers stepping forward to give their time and effort to people who are hurting. That kind of generosity and unity is something truly worth recognizing.

On the other hand, there are individuals and companies—what I can only describe as opportunists—going door to door attempting to generate insurance leads and capitalize on a disaster. In moments like this, that kind of behavior is difficult to stomach.

At the same time, I have also seen local contractors such as Lyster Exteriors—people who are part of this very community and who have even lost loved ones in this storm—step up in the most admirable ways. Instead of knocking on doors looking for work, they have been volunteering their time and equipment to help people tarp damaged roofs, recover belongings from destroyed homes, clear debris, haul materials away, and open roads to restore access for residents. They are doing this simply because it is the right thing to do.

These are the kinds of contractors who truly have a stake in this community. These are the people who live here, raise families here, and care deeply about the wellbeing of their neighbors.

They are the ones we should support and stand behind.

Please keep that in mind as repairs begin and as people come knocking on your door offering services. Local contractors who are invested in this community will be here long after the storm cleanup is finished. Out-of-town companies that appear during times of crisis are often only here for the opportunity.
