LOEWS UNIVERSAL STUDIOS RESORT – Orlando, Florida
Winning Design Competition Entry

Originally envisioned as a Polynesian / South Pacific-inspired resort, this 1,000-key development—now called Rio Calypso—features a recreational lagoon pool, luxury spa, and state-of-the-art conference center within the Universal Studios Orlando masterplan.
During the 2014 design competition, Neil Capangpangan, AIA- served as a freelance design consultant with RJTR Atlanta, where he was instrumental in shaping the early master plan and conceptual imagery that led to the winning entry—prevailing against four of the nation’s leading hospitality design firms.
All drawings were crafted by hand, capturing the vibrancy of South Pacific and Mayan influences.
In subsequent design stages, Neil continued to be involved during the early design refinements before the project transitioned fully under RJTR’s direction. The final built resort later evolved into a Caribbean-inspired architectural expression.
Recently, Neil revisited his original concept using AI-assisted visualization, exploring how timeless ideas can re-emerge through modern tools—bridging the artistry of hand-drawn design and the power of AI innovation.

🦋 THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT— Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia
Revisiting one of our early competition entries — now re-imagined through AI-enhanced visualization.
The Butterfly Square concept was envisioned as a landmark for an iconic commercial boulevard in southern Al Khobar City, Saudi Arabia. The design draws inspiration from the Butterfly Effect — symbolizing transformation and connectivity — where the architectural form unfolds from the site’s natural circulation into two sweeping wings that embrace a central plaza.
Conceived as a 16,000-sqm destination, the project aimed to attract high-end retail tenants and elevate the city’s leisure experience with floating and cascading dining terraces, water features, and landscaped gardens.
Integrating Islamic geometric motifs within a contemporary structural skin, the design explored how cultural identity and futuristic architecture can coexist harmoniously.
Although this was a design competition we didn’t win — the jury favored a more conventional, box-shaped concept — the experience reaffirmed our belief in pursuing bold, organic ideas that express movement, emotion, and innovation.
Originally modeled in Rhino and rendered in Lumion, the project has been given new life through AI-assisted visualization, revealing its full potential as a fluid, organic urban landmark.
And while the AI renders slightly altered the original geometry (we’re not 100% satisfied even after multiple re-feeds), they at least capture the spirit and context of Al Khobar, which the original render lacked.
At NFC Architects, we continue to explore this dialogue between tradition, technology, and transformation — shaping the future of architecture through innovation.

Before founding NFC Architects, our Principal Neil Capangpangan, AIA, NCARB served as Lead Designer at BBG Architects in New York City for the Siam Kempinski Hotel & Residences in Bangkok.
This landmark project brought together global expertise:
Architecture: Led by Neil during his time at BBG
Interiors: Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA)
Client/Operator: Kempinski Hotels
The result: an urban resort in the heart of Bangkok, with lush landscapes, lagoon pools, and residences seamlessly connected to Siam Paragon. With 400+ keys, the hotel exemplifies destination-quality hospitality that merges timeless design with local cultural resonance.

From Sketch to Vision: SHENZHEN OPERA HOUSE (Unsubmitted Competition Entry)

Four years ago, before the era of advanced AI-assisted modeling, we developed this design concept for the Shenzhen Opera House competition. Unfortunately, due to the extensive time required for 3D modeling at the time—and the looming submission deadline—we weren’t able to complete and submit it.
The concept is inspired by the humpback whale and its calf, a poetic symbol of guardianship, migration, and the deep connection between humanity and the sea. The flowing architectural form reflects maritime movement and fluidity, while also creating dynamic public spaces that merge with the waterfront.
Though it remained on the drawing board, the vision lives on—and today, with the support of AI modeling and visualization tools, concepts like this can be developed and realized much faster and with greater fidelity.
