👋 Meet the Lineweight Studio team!

Deepthi Chulliparambil is a designer at Lineweight Studio.

Born and raised in India, Deepthi was inspired by the diverse architecture and urban fabrics of her surroundings, which fueled her passion for designing affordable and resilient urban spaces. She has pursued those areas of interest as an architectural designer, academic, and research assistant both in India and the United States.

As a strong advocate for equitable development, she believes that vibrant, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods are essential for fostering healthier and more connected communities. Her expertise lies in designing inclusive spaces that promote community interaction and ensuring that marginalized groups are not left behind in the urban development process. Prior to moving to the US, Deepthi was actively involved in research projects aimed at advancing the principles of equitable, walkable communities. At Lineweight Studio, she is engaged in exploring adaptive reuse strategies and sustainable building approaches that breathe new life into existing spaces. Outside of work, Deepthi enjoys reading, taking road trips, and spending time with family

👋 Two and a half years in, maybe it's time to introduce ourselves?

First up: Eric Bethany, RA, Lineweight Studio's founder and principal.

Eric Bethany is an Atlanta-based architect specializing in adaptive reuse and renovation design. While growing up on Sullivan's Island, a barrier island outside of Charleston, South Carolina, he developed an appreciation of historic architecture, walkable urbanism, and climate-responsive design, and further pursued those interested at the Tulane University School of Architecture in New Orleans, where he completed dual Bachelors and Masters degrees in architecture. After arriving in Atlanta in 2015, Bethany discovered a passion for adaptive reuse and renovation projects and learned the nuts and bolts of walkable urbanism as a designer at at Kronberg Urbanists + Architects (formerly Kronberg Wall Architects). After contributing to several award-winning projects over seven years at KUA, Bethany left the firm as Senior Designer in 2022 and founded Lineweight Studio as the next chapter in his pursuit to bring together his passion and expertise for adaptive reuse, placemaking, and highly contextual design. Since opening Lineweight Studio, Bethany has helped local small businesses, homeowners, and property developers to develop unique design solutions and navigate the convoluted processes of permitting and construction.

Outside of work, Bethany is an avid traveler, a music lover, enthusiastic eater, and an advocate for a better South. He is always excited to talk about the region's diverse cuisines, art, music, literature, geography, and of course, architecture. Ask him about heritage grains sometime - ideally after a couple drinks. He and his wife Stephanie live in a 1928 American Foursquare in College Park with their dog and cat, who get along just fine.

The Cottages at Heritage.

Heritage has sixteen guest cottages arranged in a cluster around the Pine Lodge. The design team created four unit types, ranging in size from a studio unit all the way to a four-bed 'duplex'. Along with a bedroom, full bath, and kitchenette, each unit has a front porch for socializing and a screened porch for quiet reflection.

The design team took an extremely hands-on approach to the location and orientation of the cottages, assessing topography in person, staking out the footprint of each unit, and tagging trees to be preserved over the course of several walkthroughs with the client and contractor. This approach allowed us to minimize site disturbance and tree removal and replanting, and lead to a small 'neighborhood' of buildings that sit in the landscape naturally.

A critical factor towards fostering a sense of tranquility and connection with nature was minimizing vehicular access. Each cottage has a small pull-off for guests to unload their luggage, but guests' cars are stored in a larger parking lot off the main property. Eliminating the noise and visual presence of cars is a hugely powerful way help visitors reset mentally and truly engage with the natural surroundings.

The Pine Lodge at Heritage.

The Pine Lodge is the social and functional core of Heritage, a new Catholic-oriented retreat located in rural eastern Georgia. Located near the site of the state’s first Catholic settlement, including the state’s oldest Catholic church, Heritage offers visitors a tranquil setting to seek, find, and renew their faith. With this design, our goal was to craft a timeless building that is firmly anchored in its unique historic and geographic context by referencing regional architectural forms and detailing, using materials native to site, and thoughtfully integrating the building with nature.

Some of the most fun buildings to design at .ga were the smallest ones. The masterplan for the 200-acre property developed by Elizabeth Ward Williams and Jeff Williams called for a wide variety of outbuildings, some intended to support operations, some to encourage visitors to engage with the landscape, and others just to provide a shady spot to catch your breath.

With these designs, we referenced traditional southern architectural forms and materials - deep overhangs, exposed wood framing, galvanized metal roofing, etc. We wanted the buildings to feel like they'd always been there, and always will be.

I've spent my entire life in the South, and I grew up seeing buildings like these on the farms where my mother taught horseback riding and on summer road trips upstate. It was a joyful experience to draw from those memories to create these designs, and it makes me happy to see them sitting so naturally in the landscape now.

Thrilled to finally share photos from Heritage, the Catholic-oriented retreat center on a historic 200-acre property in rural Georgia that I was fortunate to design in collaboration with a large and talented group including , Jeff Williams, , , , , , and with contributions from many others. I am so proud of how this project turned out. A huge thank you to for capturing the project beautifully. A few more people deserve specific mention:

Tripp Pickles of Southern Landscape and Design was an exceptional construction partner, securing resources for this remote, rural project during the peak of the pandemic labor and material shortages. I cannot speak highly enough of Tripp and his team.

Betsy Orr and her team .ga did an outstanding job keeping the team on track and in high spirits during the long design and construction process.

My involvement in this project spanned five years of continuous, rigorous design. It had a huge impact on my life, personally and professionally. I made over a hundred trips to the site between May 2019 and April 2024. I got married, started my architecture practice, bought a house, and more all while working on this project.

I am so proud of what the project team has accomplished, and proud of the strong relationships that came out of the process. “Rigorous” really is the best word to describe that process - so much thought and effort, so many zoom calls, site visits, debates, mockups, re-mockups, etc. went into transforming this raw rural property into the rich, coherent, and beautiful place it is today. This project is a prime example of the act of placemaking - and a specific subset called ‘sacred placemaking’ - and I am excited to share more about how we arrived at this spectacular outcome. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share more photos and thoughts that unpack the thinking behind the design - I’ll hope you’ll follow along here and on linkedin.
