After successfully completing a renovation of the in-house café in the original Richard Meier building of the High Museum of Art, Axios was asked to update the existing gift shop in the Renzo Piano addition to the iconic museum. The design objective for the gift shop was to improve merchandising by creating a fresh, white, and bright space that is much more visually open and inviting, while staying true to the general aesthetic and architecture of the buildings.
The renovation of the High Museum of Art Gift Shop is another example of Steve’s creativity in updating a heavily-used space, improving traffic flow, incorporating artistic elements, and utilizing the latest technology in his design solution.

“There are many important choices when starting a renovation. Not one of them is more important than hiring the right architect. This one single decision probably has more weight that all others combined. Naturally, I was very concerned of finding the right person for a relatively difficult job.

I decided to go with Steve, and that was the my best decision yet. First of all, he is agreat person. He did not rush or push for decision when we were completely confused. He guided us and helped choose what is right for our needs. We always had radical different choices or if we liked something in general he would still show a couple of subtle changes to improve the outcome.

Second of all, Steve is a natural talent. Experience is a great asset but natural talent should always be at the base. His vision and understanding is extraordinary. If we were considering an idea there was no problem for him to get the pen and paper and sketch it for us.

Finally, he never delayed the schedule. The prints were done without mistakes. On the entire project the contractor only had one small question. He said that never happened to him before.

I always felt that no matter who I choose I will not be satisfied just by my nature of being perfectionist and I am happy to say I was wrong.

Thank you Steve!”

“‘We want to open up the kitchen a little before the baby comes.’ The situation the new homeowners had not yet realized is the kitchen was the circulation core of the house. Poor, space consuming circulation confined the remaining public rooms, making them difficult to use and furnish. Ultimately, the entire home was renovated to accommodate a significantly better kitchen and overall circulation layout.”

The MCM Pavilion, a 2021 AIA Residential Design Awards Finalist, is a dramatically renovated front entry and new kitchen/dining space designed by Axios Architecture. The owners wanted to improve the flow of interior spaces while also creating an attractive street presence. Steve designed a 210 SF addition that delivers functional efficiency, creates aesthetic impact, and provides community connection.

The MCM Pavilion is an excellent example of Steve’s creativity in working within the constraints of an extremely limited buildable area and transforming it into a beautiful and functional space.

“Steve is a true artist, a consummate professional and above all a great listener. [He understands] what is most important to his clients in terms of the design/aesthetics, intention for or functional use of the space once complete, and any budgetary constraints that can be adhered to or designed towards maintaining.”

GAINESVILLE GARDEN

After passing through the intimately scaled entry doors, the rising wood ceiling of the admissions lobby dramatically frames the woodland vista, beckoning visitors to engage the garden beyond.

Parties and receptions seamlessly flow between the event space, large covered porch, and extended terrace beyond. An outdoor fireplace adds a finishing touch complementing the beauty of the embracing pond and garden areas.
