You've probably noticed small white scales on your crepe myrtles or that they are starting to turn black. The little white scales are called crepe myrtle bark scale (CMBS) and they can be devastating to your crepe myrtles.
The scales feed primarily on twigs and branches of the tree and will rarely feed on the leaves. This feeding causes the crepe myrtle to produce honeydew which results in a black sooty mold on the tree.
Sooty mold alone is not a definite indication of CMBS, but if you also find white, felt-covered scales that bleed pink when punctured, you can be sure you have found crape myrtle bark scale.
There are treatment options for CMBS. We have found that soil injections of imadicloprid are the most effective, but they do take a couple of weeks to work. Keep in mind that once CMBS and sooty mold have accumulated on your crepe myrtle that they will not come off when the scales die, so timing is crucial. We recommend having your crepe myrtles treated late March thru May to avoid build up of honeydew.
If you had a crepe myrtle with bark scale on it last year, it is recommended to go ahead and treat that tree this year as well as any crepe myrtles that are nearby as CMBS do spread quickly.
Generally, the cost to treat CMBS is $30 for average size crepe myrtles (approx. 15 feet tall). Call Mandy at 901-476-8188 to schedule an appointment.

Call today to schedule an Aeration for your lawn!
Core aeration is the process of removing small cores of soil 1” to 2” in length from your lawn leaving a small, hollow opening in its place. Aeration is a practice that needs to be done every year. It helps the entire w**d control and fertilization program work much better.

What are the benefits of aerating?
1. It creates a healthier and thicker turf.
2. It reduces the amount of thatch and soil compaction.
3. It allows water, air and nutrients easier access to the root system.

What happens to the cores?
After a few rains they melt back into the soil. To speed up the process, you can mow your lawn or water it a few times. As for the small holes in your lawn, the grass roots will grow into those making your lawn thicker and healthier.

Give us a call at 901-476-8188 to schedule an aeration for your lawn!

You may have noticed frost on your lawn and car windows last Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. This is nothing to be overly concerned about, but I do want to let you know that it is causing delayed green up and some patchy discoloration on most lawns. Most lawns I've seen are still about 50% dormant which means about half of the yard is brown and the other half green. A lot of times you will notice the more brown in areas that get some shade during the day.

Typically, by this time of year our lawns are completely green and most people have had to mow a couple of times. If you haven't mowed yet, it is still a great time to scalp your lawn which means to mow it as low as possible and remove the clippings. This will help it green up more evenly.

Our technicians are spreading fertilizer so that when the temperatures do come up, your grass will have plenty of "food" to get off to a healthy start. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I will be happy to help.
