Vermiculite is a silver-gold to gray-brown mineral that is flat and shiny in its natural state. When heated to around 1000 degrees C, it pops (or puffs up) which creates pockets of air. This expanded form, and the fact that vermiculite does not burn, made the material suitable for use as insulation

Vermiculite itself has not been shown to be a health problem. However, some vermiculite insulation contained asbestos fibers, which can cause problems if inhaled. If this kind of vermiculite-based insulation remains undisturbed behind intact walls or in attic spaces and does not become airborne, it should not be a concern. However, If remodeling or Previous to a demolition it is advised to use the safety precaution and properly have this material abated.

AAD is dedicated to safe removal, investing in and industrial RUWAC HEPA vacuum specifically designed for vermiculite removal.

What does the EPA say about mold?

Mold are ubiquitous in the biosphere, and mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. The vast majority of mold is not hazardous to humans, and reaction to mold can vary between individuals, with relatively minor allergic reactions being the most common. Nonetheless, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in its June 2006 report, ‘Mold Prevention Strategies and Possible Health Effects in the Aftermath of Hurricanes and Major Floods,’ that “excessive exposure to mold-contaminated materials can cause adverse health effects in susceptible persons regardless of the type of mold or the extent of contamination. When mold spores are present in abnormally high quantities, they can present especially hazardous health risks to humans after prolonged exposure, including allergic reactions or poisoning by mycotoxins, or causing fungal infection (mycosis). Whether it is a cold, damp winter or a warm, humid summer, activities at home can result in moisture indoors and the appearance of mold. Mold can grow on walls, clothes, books, toys, and even CDs. It can turn prized possessions into musty relics that only look fit for the garbage. Mold health issues are potentially harmful effects of prolonged exposure. Exposure to high levels of mycotoxins can lead to neurological problems and in some cases death. Prolonged exposure, e.g., daily workplace exposure, can be particularly harmful.

If you detect mildew growing in your carpet, upholstery or other surfaces it is important to act fast, to reduce the risk of health problems. Don’t disturb the mold. This will keep airborne mold particles to a minimum. Try and keep away from the moldy area, and turn off the air conditioning, to avoid the transfer of mold to other rooms and to the air conditioning system

Demolition is safely and professionally tearing down a home or structure. We continually strive to be better and do better and in rolling out a new demolition department, this continues. Typically, before we can begin demolition services for our clients; there must be a hazardous materials survey completed. This is the process where an AHERA Building Inspector surveys, materials that are suspect. Once that has been addressed then permits, followed by submitting notifications and disconnecting utilities become essential prior to demolition work starting. AAD currently takes on demolition projects that fit our size and scope.

Is Removing an Old Tank, Burner or Furnace myself Hazardous?

Usually when a customer has switched from oil to gas, they want the old equipment removed. In this case, the oil tank, oil burner, and the oil furnace or boiler may need to be removed. We do not recommend doing this yourself. Here is why. Boilers built before 1978 are typically heavy, bulky, and difficult to take apart. Cutting up a boiler can produce smoke, iron or steel chips, and asbestos dust depending on the construction of the boiler. AAD has the experience you need to remove your boiler swiftly and safely.

Asbestos is a component of thousands of building materials use between the 20’s-80’s and is known to be a hazardous carcinogen. Homeowners, landlords, and contractors must perform testing or site surveys prior to disturbing or demolishing building any building materials that may contain asbestos. Although most people aware of the potential for asbestos content in popcorn ceiling, vinyl tiles, and pipe insulation; any building material that is not made of wood, metal, or glass may contain asbestos. A Certified AHERA Building Inspector will help you to determine the appropriate sampling plan and protocol to ensure that you protect yourself from health impacts and liabilities, without wasting money on abating unnecessary materials. We would be happy to discuss your project specifics and come up with a plan that satisfies the legal and health obligations without excessive costs and fees.

WHEN DO YOU NEED AN INSPECTION?

Any time you are remodeling, demolishing, repairing or otherwise disturbing materials that may contain asbestos, an asbestos inspection is required. Unfortunately, building owners and contractors are often unaware of the needs for asbestos inspections until late in the project. A Certified AHERA Building Inspector can help to limit abatement costs and provide a thorough report that will get the project done safely.
