Those with the proper machines and materials could make their own buildings, with a design tailored to their personal tastes, and they could do it by themselves. In an era when lumber and brick were rising in cost, the affordability of cement brought further appeal to the use of blocks. The sale of rock face concrete block became a national phenomenon, bolstered by its promotion in catalogs and industry publications that went to farmers, land owners and urban residences. By the time 1930 rolled around, and the use of cinderblock had become the norm, concrete block had already penetrated so much of the construction market that it remains a noticeable element even today. Go into any historic area, in most any city in America, and you will find homes and businesses constructed of rock face concrete blocks. Chances are, you’ve driven past such a structure recently and thought to yourself, “Isn’t that neat? They just don’t make ’em like that anymore.”
