Meet Michael: one of our talented summer interns! 👋

Michael Devereaux, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology, has been spending his co-op with Beardsley this summer as an intern in our Mechanical Engineering department.

One of the projects he has been working on is the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge & New York Field Office, where he’s been modeling mechanical systems in Revit.

We’re excited that Michael will be continuing his co-op with us through the rest of the year, and we been grateful to have him on the team! 👏

It’s been a busy summer for Evie Loan who is entering her senior year at SUNY ESF, and who joined our civil engineering team as an intern this summer!

She got to experience a little bit of everything, from site visits to working on projects at SUNY ESF and Darien Lakes State Park.

We’ve enjoyed having her as part of our team and seeing her jump in, ask questions, and get hands-on experience. We’re grateful for the time and effort she put into the projects she worked on with us.

Following a devastating fire, Beardsley led a full restoration and preservation effort in 2014 for historic Gunnison Chapel on St. Lawrence University’s campus, a landmark of Gothic Revival architecture. Originally built in 1926, the chapel required extensive repairs to fire, smoke, and water damage while maintaining its historic character.

After the fire, the University identified three goals: restore the building and repair damage, improve accessibility, safety, and usefulness, and extend the building’s longevity for future generations.

The project included replacing the destroyed wood bell tower roof with steel framing and the destroyed flèche with a new steel, aluminum, and copper structure. The slate roof and copper gutters were repaired, and the stone masonry façade was extensively restored through repointing and replacement of the original “Litholite” cast stone with precast architectural concrete molded from the original pieces.

Inside, the damaged Nave floor and electrical systems were replaced, water-damaged plaster was repaired, and wood paneling, pews, trim, gold-leaf appliqué, stained glass, interior stonework, and finishes were cleaned, repaired, refinished, or repainted. The hand-chimed carillon was also restored.

Accessibility and safety upgrades included an accessible main-floor restroom and modern fire and security systems.

Preserving the chapel’s original details was important to the campus community. One of the original eight four-foot-tall copper angels was restored and incorporated into the new steeple alongside seven recreated angels. Original initials scribed by former bell ringers in the Bell Ringer room were preserved, and a complete decorative copper panel from the original steeple was saved for future display.

The project received an AIACNY award for Adaptive Reuse and Historic Preservation in 2017. Today, Gunnison Chapel continues to serve the St. Lawrence community, with its historic character and importance preserved for generations to come.

Everyone deserves a place they're proud to call home. 🏡

The West Valley apartment complex in Lake Placid was designed back in 2002 to provide just that. This affordable housing community includes 11 two- and three-bedroom apartments across two buildings and includes office spaces for staff.

To blend seamlessly into the community, ​the buildings are designed with an Adirondack aesthetic and create a living environment that residents can take pride in.

On this , let's take a look at this extensive renovation project from 2017 that we did with the E John Gavras Center in Auburn, NY.

The E. John Gavras Center is an organization that works to assist individuals with developmental and physical disabilities of all ages, Pre-K and up. The Center’s School has been located in Auburn, New York since its inception 60 years ago.

Beardsley Architects + Engineers designed the original school building and has maintained a relationship with its owners for 60 years.

The 2017 renovation included:

We often share rendering vs. reality, but what you don't always see is everything that happens before we get to the final product.

This project at Southwick Beach State Park is a perfect example.

The first concept leaned more modern, with stone exteriors, glass accents, and an exposed timber overhang, but ultimately, our client decided it wasn't quite the feel they were going for and we changed direction on the design.

After taking in feedback, we landed on the blue and white buildings with pergolas that tie together the concession building, bathhouse, and lifeguard building. The final design feels much more natural on the shoreline.

One of our favorite parts of the process is that the first idea doesn't have to be the final one. The best projects come from conversations, collaboration, and being willing to keep refining until it feels right.
