🌳 The Right Way to Prune Crepe Myrtles for Maximum Beauty & Health! 🌳
Crepe Myrtles are stunning trees that thrive with proper pruning, but many homeowners unknowingly commit "Crepe Murder"—over-pruning that weakens the tree. At Cheatham’s Landscaping, we ensure your Crepe Myrtles stay strong, shapely, and full of blooms! Here’s how:
✅ Proper Pruning Techniques
1️⃣ Prune in Late Winter – The best time to prune is late January to early March before new growth emerges. This allows the tree to focus its energy on fresh, healthy blooms.
2️⃣ Remove Suckers & Weak Growth – Cut away small shoots at the base and any weak or crossing branches inside the canopy to improve airflow.
3️⃣ Never "Top" the Tree – Avoid cutting the main branches too short. Instead, trim only 1/4 of last year’s growth, keeping the tree’s natural shape. Over-pruning leads to weak, spindly branches and fewer blooms.
4️⃣ Cut at the Right Spot – Always prune just above an outward-facing bud or branch collar, making clean cuts at a slight angle to prevent disease.
5️⃣ Shape, Don’t Chop – Keep a natural, vase-like shape by trimming only where necessary. The goal is thinning, not butchering!
With the right pruning, your Crepe Myrtles will bloom fuller, live longer, and maintain a graceful form all year round. Need expert care for your landscape? Cheatham’s Landscaping has you covered!
