PLC of the Northeast - Professional Loggers Giving the Northeast’s professional independent logging & forest trucking contractors a voice.

Since 1995, the Professional Logging Contractors (PLC) of the Northeast has been the unified voice for independent logging and trucking professionals. Founded 'by loggers, for loggers,' our board is composed entirely of industry contractors. We don't just represent the industry; we protect the future of logging and the forest economy through aggressive advocacy, specialized certification, and a steadfast commitment to responsible forest management.

A solid win for rural Vermonters and the state’s forest economy.

The partial repeal of Act 181 is now official, rolling back provisions that would have made it more difficult to manage and access working lands across the state.

This common-sense outcome reflects strong engagement from landowners, contractors, and industry professionals. The PLC was proud to support these changes, including testimony from PLC member Sam Lincoln, who helped bring practical, on-the-ground perspective to the conversation.

We also appreciate Governor Phil Scott for recognizing the concerns raised by a broad range of stakeholders, including the logging industry, and taking action.

This is a step in the right direction for maintaining viable working forests and supporting responsible land management across Vermont.

The move marks a win for a broad coalition of rural landowners who organized en masse to protest against Act 181, a land-use permitting overhaul passed in 2024.

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s working group focused on prioritizing wellness and mental health resources for heritage industries will hold its next meeting on tomorrow, June 12 from 10 AM – 12 PM.

This important effort brings people together from across Maine’s logging, agriculture, fishing, and farming communities to support the well-being of those who keep these industries strong.

PLC is proud to be part of this work. Executive Director Dana Doran serves on the working group and will be presenting during this session, building on PLC’s ongoing commitment to safety and mental health. For several years, PLC has partnered with NAMI Maine to incorporate mental health and wellness into our annual spring safety trainings, helping bring these conversations directly to the timber harvesting industry.

Loggers, ag workers, farmers, fisherman, and others connected to Maine’s heritage industries are encouraged to join, listen in, and take part in the public comment portion of the meeting.

"Doing nothing" isn't always doing what’s best for the forest.

Many believe that an unmanaged forest is the healthiest option. But in the Northeast, our forests are naturally regenerative because they reseed themselves and many are "middle-aged" and overcrowded. This leads to:

- Stagnant growth (trees competing for light and nutrients)
- Increased risk of disease and pest outbreaks
- High fuel loads for wildfires

Responsible professional logging is health care for the forest. By strategically thinning stands just as a farmer would w**d a garden or thin a row of carrots, we remove the "low-vigor" trees, giving the healthiest ones room to breathe, grow, and become the giants of tomorrow.

Pro Tip: Forest management works with nature by mimicking natural disturbances like wind, insects, and fire, while using science to promote healthy, resilient forests.
